Position Summary The Pressman-in-Training is an entry-level production position designed to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively operate a production press. The employee will work alongside an experienced Press Operator while learning press operation, job setup, material handling, quality standards, troubleshooting, and safe work practices. The Pressman-in-Training will initially assist the Press Operator with daily production activities and gradually take on additional responsibilities as skills and proficiency are demonstrated. Once the employee has successfully demonstrated the required skills, knowledge, safety practices, and ability to operate the equipment independently, they may be certified by management to operate the assigned press without direct supervision.
Shift while training:
Tuesday - Thursday 6:00am - 6:00pm Essential Duties and Responsibilities Training & Press Operation Work alongside an experienced Press Operator to learn the safe and proper operation of assigned press equipment. Learn and follow established safety procedures, operating instructions, and production standards. Assist with press setup and job changes under the direction of the Press Operator. Learn to identify and properly handle plates, paper, substrates, inks, and other materials required for production. Assist with loading and positioning materials and preparing the press for production. Learn how to start, operate, monitor, and shut down the press safely. Learn to make routine press adjustments under the direction of the Press Operator. Observe and participate in proper press cleaning and housekeeping procedures. Progressively assume additional press responsibilities as training and proficiency allow. Ask questions and seek assistance when unsure of the proper procedure or when an issue is outside the scope of training. Quality Control Learn established quality standards and job specifications. Inspect finished product during production for defects, inconsistencies, or other quality concerns. Learn to identify common issues such as poor print quality, registration problems, color inconsistencies, smearing, or other defects. Assist with first-piece and ongoing quality checks as directed by the Press Operator. Immediately communicate quality concerns to the Press Operator or supervisor. Learn when production should be stopped or escalated due to a quality concern. Develop the ability to recognize when product meets established quality expectations before operating independently. Troubleshooting & Problem Solving Learn to identify common press operating and production issues. Assist with troubleshooting under the direction of an experienced Press Operator. Learn appropriate basic adjustments that can be safely performed by an operator. Learn how to respond appropriately to paper jams, feeding issues, registration problems, equipment alarms, and other routine issues. Recognize abnormal noises, vibration, equipment behavior, or other conditions that may require the press to be stopped. Understand when an issue requires assistance from the Press Operator, Maintenance, supervisor, or another qualified employee. Never attempt repairs or adjustments outside of the employee's training or authorization. Safety Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and required PPE requirements. Maintain awareness of moving machinery and other production hazards. Learn proper emergency stop procedures and the location and use of applicable safety devices. Follow established Lockout/Tagout procedures and understand when equipment must be taken out of service. Never bypass machine guards, safety devices, or established safety procedures. Remain attentive to operating equipment and do not leave an operating press unattended unless specifically authorized. Immediately report injuries, near misses, equipment damage, unsafe conditions, or other incidents. Maintain a clean and organized work area. Follow proper procedures for handling materials, inks, chemicals, and other production supplies. Production & Housekeeping Assist with loading, unloading, staging, and handling production materials. Assist with preparing completed product for the next stage of production. Help minimize scrap and waste by following job specifications and proper operating procedures. Maintain an organized work area and assist with routine press cleaning. Properly dispose of production waste and materials. Complete required production paperwork or electronic records as training progresses. Assist with other production duties as assigned. Press Certification / Advancement The Pressman-in-Training will progress through training based on demonstrated knowledge, skills, safety awareness, quality performance, and ability to operate the press effectively. Before being approved to operate a press independently, the employee must demonstrate the ability to: Safely start, operate, and shut down the press. Follow all applicable safety procedures without constant supervision. Understand and follow job specifications and production instructions. Properly handle and install plates and production materials. Perform basic press setup and routine operating adjustments. Monitor product quality and identify common defects. Perform basic troubleshooting within the scope of operator training. Recognize when a problem requires the press to be stopped or escalated. Know when not to attempt a repair or adjustment. Communicate effectively with supervisors, Press Operators, Maintenance, Quality, and other employees. Complete required production documentation accurately. Maintain a clean and safe work area. Demonstrate sound judgment and the ability to work independently. Certification to operate a press independently will be determined by management based on demonstrated competency and successful completion of the company's training requirements. Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous manufacturing, production, printing, or machine operation experience is helpful but not required. Mechanical aptitude or interest in learning machine operation preferred. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality. Dependable attendance and willingness to learn. Positive attitude and strong work ethic. Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors. Ability to work effectively as part of a team. Ability to learn new equipment, processes, and computer systems. Ability to recognize problems and ask questions when assistance is needed. Physical Requirements The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation. Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and move throughout the production area. Ability to lift and move materials weighing up to [X] pounds . Ability to perform repetitive movements associated with press operation and material handling. Ability to work around moving machinery and manufacturing equipment. Ability to work in an environment with varying temperatures, noise, dust, paper, and other typical manufacturing conditions. Ability to wear required PPE while working in production areas. Work Environment This position works primarily in a manufacturing and production environment. The employee will regularly be exposed to moving mechanical equipment, paper dust or airborne particles, varying temperatures, and moderate to high noise levels. Safety is a primary responsibility of this position. The employee is expected to follow all safety procedures, use required PPE, maintain awareness of surrounding equipment and employees, and immediately report unsafe conditions or incidents. What Success Looks Like A successful Pressman-in-Training is dependable, willing to learn, attentive to detail, and committed to working safely. They actively participate in training, ask questions, learn from experienced operators, and progressively demonstrate the ability to perform press operations with less supervision. The goal of the position is to develop the employee into a competent, safety-conscious Press Operator who can independently operate an assigned press while maintaining production, quality, and safety standards.
