Steel Tube Mill Operator Job Description This role operates and maintains steel tube mills that produce round and shaped tubing for an automotive manufacturing environment. You will ensure tubing meets precise specifications for length, straightness, and overall quality while safely handling steel coils and supporting mill setup and changeovers. The position offers the opportunity to work with newly updated milling equipment and to grow within an expanding department. Responsibilities Operate steel tube mills to produce tubes and shafts within specified diameter ranges, including round, square, and rectangular shapes. Ensure each tube meets required specifications for length, straightness, and overall quality by performing accurate measurements and inspections. Troubleshoot issues on the mill and perform routine maintenance to keep equipment running efficiently and safely. Load steel coils into the mill and weld coil ends together to maintain continuous production. Assist with and complete mill changeovers, including adjusting setups for different tube sizes and shapes. Monitor mill performance and make setup adjustments as needed to maintain product quality and throughput. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with plant standards. Follow all safety procedures and guidelines when working with mills, coils, and related equipment. Collaborate with team members and supervisors to meet production goals and support continuous improvement efforts. Essential Skills At least 2 years of steel tube mill operation experience. Ability to check and verify specifications for tube length, straightness, and overall quality using appropriate measurement tools. Experience loading steel coils into mills and welding coil ends together. Comfort and proficiency with mill changeovers and setup adjustments for different tube sizes and shapes. Hands-on experience working in a production or steel fabrication environment. Strong mechanical aptitude and familiarity with roll forming, milling, and machine operation. Ability to work safely in an automotive manufacturing environment that can be greasy and rough. Willingness to work any shift and perform overtime, including weekends, as required. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with roll forming and steel fabrication processes. Background in machine operating within a machine shop environment. Exposure to tube bending, pipe fitting, and welding operations. Experience with milling machines, including horizontal mills and boring mills. Comfort working with a variety of tube shapes, including round, square, and rectangular tubing. Interest in learning new equipment and processes as the milling department grows. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based in an automotive manufacturing environment that can be greasy and rough, typical of heavy steel and tube milling operations. You will work with three mills that run shaft diameters of approximately 1.5 to 3 inches and tube diameters of approximately 0.5 to 3 inches, including round, square, and rectangular tubes. The facility operates on three shifts: 1st shift from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 2nd shift from 2:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., and 3rd shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Overtime, including weekends, may be required to meet production demands. You will work around steel coils, mills, and related equipment in an industrial setting where appropriate workwear and personal protective equipment are necessary. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Milan, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $42848.00 - $54080.00/yr.
