Job Title:
Press Operator Job Description This entry-level press operator role offers a hands-on opportunity to learn commercial printing from the ground up. You will assist experienced operators in all phases of production, develop a strong understanding of printing processes, and gradually take on greater responsibility. The position focuses on producing high-quality printed products while maintaining strict standards for safety, cleanliness, and product integrity. Responsibilities Operate printing equipment to produce high-quality products while maintaining established quality standards, minimizing scrap, and achieving acceptable productivity levels. Assist press operators in all phases of production and become familiar with standard operator routines and procedures. Acquire knowledge of printing techniques, machine capabilities, and different paper qualities to support consistent and accurate production. Learn to troubleshoot printing equipment, identify issues, and assist in resolving problems to minimize downtime. Perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment according to established schedules and complete daily cleaning tasks to keep machines in optimal condition. Monitor products for signs of contamination, defects, or quality issues, segregate affected materials, and promptly report concerns. Remain vigilant for sanitation, pest control, and contamination concerns throughout the production area and take appropriate action when issues arise. Monitor processes for potential sources of contamination or factors that may impact performance or quality and report them promptly. Accurately record production data in handwritten logs and computer-based systems, including spreadsheets or manufacturing information software. Inform production leadership of key issues, equipment concerns, or process deviations on a daily basis. Set a positive example by demonstrating a strong work ethic, supporting team members, and consistently following company policies and procedures. Work both independently and as part of a team to meet production goals and respond effectively to new job challenges. Perform physical tasks such as climbing, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and using push carts as needed during production. Lift and move materials, including paper rolls and related supplies, in accordance with job requirements and safety guidelines. Comply with all safety procedures, use required personal protective equipment, and remain aware of hazards such as moving mechanical parts, vehicles, electrical components, and atmospheric conditions. Carry out any additional duties assigned by production leadership or management in support of overall operational needs. Essential Skills Demonstrated technical and mechanical aptitude, preferably shown through prior work experience. Ability to read a tape measure or ruler accurately in increments up to 1/64 inch. Ability to mix base color inks to create specified PMS (Pantone Matching System) colors. Capability to mount printing plates onto appropriate cylinders with accuracy and attention to detail. Strong attention to quality, with a focus on minimizing scrap and maintaining consistent production standards. Ability to distinguish and identify colors accurately and successfully pass a color vision test. Comfort working with measurement tools and quality assurance processes in a production environment. Basic computer skills, including the ability to enter and maintain accurate data in electronic systems. Ability to accurately record information in handwritten logs and computer programs such as Excel or manufacturing information systems. Willingness and ability to work independently with minimal supervision while also collaborating effectively with peers and leadership. Goal-oriented mindset with a willingness to accept new job challenges and responsibilities. Cost- and quality-conscious approach to daily work, balancing efficiency with product integrity. Physical ability to perform very heavy work, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and more than 20 pounds constantly to move objects such as paper rolls. Comfort working in an environment with noise, moving mechanical parts, vehicles, electrical current, and exposure to fumes or vapors from varnishes, chemicals, or cleaning agents. Required visual acuity to assess the accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness of work and to make general observations of facilities and equipment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, is helpful for data entry and reporting. Experience working with printing presses or in a print production environment is beneficial. Prior exposure to quality assurance practices, measurement tools, or mechanical equipment is an advantage. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with peers and leadership in a team-oriented environment. Work Environment The work environment is a clean, well-lit, climate-controlled production facility designed for comfort and consistency. Team members work 8-hour shifts, with a second shift from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., and initial training takes place on first shift for approximately one to three months. The role involves working around printing presses and related mechanical equipment, as well as moving vehicles and electrical components, in an environment where noise is present. Employees may be exposed to fumes and vapors from varnishes, chemicals, and cleaning agents, and must be comfortable functioning in narrow aisles and around moving mechanical parts. Personal protective equipment is required, including safety glasses and closed-toe shoes, and the dress code prohibits jewelry, painted fingernails, and clothing with strings such as hoodie drawstrings to maintain safety and cleanliness. The facility emphasizes sanitation, pest control, and contamination prevention to protect product and process integrity. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bowling Green, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $20.00/hr.
