General Production Worker - Packaging Job Description This role focuses on safely and accurately packaging dry powdered food products on production lines while following all food-related Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). You will handle product packing, basic machine-related tasks, and sanitation duties in a fast-paced manufacturing environment that requires consistent heavy lifting, attention to detail, and adherence to strict food safety standards. Responsibilities Follow all food-related GMP and SOP guidelines at all times to ensure product quality and safety. Pack dry powdered items on production lines for shipment, ensuring correct packaging and labeling. Inspect products to confirm they are not damaged, broken, or otherwise compromised before packing. Use ingredients correctly for mixing processes, including tasks related to mixing, batching, and following recipes as needed. Check product weights and accurately record all lot numbers and bag numbers used for traceability. Perform sanitation practices on equipment and work areas as required in a food packaging environment. Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area throughout the shift. Lift and move 50-55 pounds on a consistent basis at waist height and shift weight side to side as needed. Work safely in confined areas within an older manufacturing building, including spiral staircases and tight spaces. Access and work on elevated areas such as catwalks above machines when required. Support general production activities, including loading and unloading materials and assisting with machine operation. Train on forklift usage in the future and operate equipment safely once trained, if required. Use basic mechanical aptitude to assist with simple maintenance tasks on machines when needed. Read and follow batch mixing instructions and recipes accurately to support production processes. Record information legibly and use basic math skills, including decimals and fractions, to complete production and quality checks. Adhere to all facility rules regarding uniforms, PPE, and restrictions on jewelry and accessories. Navigate multiple levels within the facility, including frequent stair use and walking between production areas. Essential Skills Ability to consistently lift and move 50-55 pounds at waist height throughout the shift. Willingness to learn and train on forklift operation in the future, if required. Previous experience in a manufacturing or production environment, particularly with machine operation, batching, packaging, loading, and unloading. Mechanically inclined with the ability to perform basic maintenance tasks on machines. Experience with batch mixing or recipe reading in a production or food-related setting. Knowledge of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in a food environment or strong willingness to learn and follow GMP requirements. Ability to read and write legibly to complete documentation and production records accurately. Basic math skills, including working with decimals and fractions, to support measurements and quality checks. Comfort working in hot environments, confined spaces, and at heights such as catwalks. Ability to perform frequent stair climbing and walking within a large, multi-level facility. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience in food manufacturing or food packaging environments is highly beneficial. Familiarity with machine operating in batch or recipe-driven processes. Demonstrated ability to follow detailed procedures and safety guidelines in a production setting. Comfort working with dry powdered food products and awareness of potential food allergy considerations. Strong attention to detail for verifying product condition, weights, and accurate recording of lot and bag numbers. Reliability and flexibility to work 2nd or 3rd shift and adapt to future scheduling changes, including 8-hour rotating shifts. Work Environment You work in a large, older-style brick manufacturing building with additional production locations across the street. The facility produces dry powdered food items in a food-grade, GMP-required environment. Some areas of the plant can be hot, while the mixing area is air-conditioned. The role involves frequent stair use, walking between areas, and working in confined spaces and at heights on catwalks. Production currently runs on 12-hour shifts with a need for flexibility to work 2nd or 3rd shift, and the schedule will transition to typical 8-hour shifts (approximately 8-4, 4-12, and 12-8). The facility enforces strict GMP requirements: uniforms must be worn at all times, and no jewelry, fake nails, fake eyelashes, chains, watches, or rings are allowed to prevent contamination. Steel-toe boots that cover above the ankle are required from the first day. The environment emphasizes cleanliness, food safety, and adherence to detailed procedures in a busy production setting. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Defiance, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.50/hr.
