We are seeking a detail-oriented Newspaper Layout & Production Specialist to oversee the design, layout, and production of our publication from content preparation through print-ready files. Position Summary The Newspaper Layout & Production Specialist is responsible for designing and producing each issue of The Flint Courier using Adobe Creative Suite. This individual will prepare articles and photographs for publication, maintain production schedules, create print-ready files, and work closely with staff and our printing partner to ensure every issue is produced accurately and on deadline. Key Responsibilities Newspaper Layout & Design Design and lay out each edition of The Flint Courier using Adobe InDesign. Format articles imported from Microsoft Word into newspaper layouts while maintaining consistent typography, spacing, and style. Arrange editorial content, advertisements, photographs, and graphics for an attractive, reader-friendly publication. Ensure each edition meets established branding and design standards. Photo Editing & Graphics Edit and color-correct photographs using Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop. Create or source high-quality graphics using Adobe Stock and Adobe Firefly AI. Ensure all visual elements meet publication quality standards. Production & Prepress Prepare press-ready PDF files for commercial printing. Combine and organize publication files according to printer specifications. Submit completed files to the printing company by established deadlines. Communicate with printing partners regarding production requirements and schedules. Proofreading & Quality Control Perform light proofreading for formatting, spelling, grammar, and consistency. Verify page numbering, image placement, advertisements, and overall layout accuracy before publication. Maintain high standards for quality and attention to detail throughout the production process. Production Administration Develop and maintain the newspaper's annual production and printing calendar. Create and update production forms, schedules, and workflow documents. Prepare and update printing schedules and production forms for staff. Complete issue documentation and publication records for internal use. Maintain organized electronic files and archives for each edition. Team Collaboration Download and organize editorial content received via email. Coordinate with editorial staff regarding layout needs and deadlines. Communicate with the newspaper's delivery representative regarding schedule updates and distribution changes. Assist with creating additional forms, templates, and production materials as needed. Required Qualifications Experience with newspaper, magazine, or publication layout. Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, particularly: Adobe InDesign (required) Adobe Acrobat Pro Adobe Lightroom Adobe Photoshop Adobe Firefly AI (or willingness to learn) Proficiency with Microsoft Word. Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel. Strong organizational and time management skills. Excellent attention to detail. Ability to meet production deadlines while maintaining quality. Preferred Qualifications Previous experience working with commercial print production. Familiarity with preparing print-ready PDF files. Experience working in journalism, publishing, or newspaper production. Understanding of typography, page design, and visual storytelling.
