This is a hands-on purchasing role responsible for sourcing production materials and components, obtaining competitive pricing, negotiating with suppliers, issuing and managing purchase orders, and making sure materials arrive when production needs them. We are looking for someone who understands that manufacturing purchasing is more than placing orders. The right person will actively manage cost, lead time, supplier performance, material availability, inventory, and purchasing accuracy while working closely with Production, Engineering, Quality, Operations, and Finance. Duties Source production materials, components, and outside services based on BOMs, drawings, specifications, production requirements, and approved supplier requirements. Issue RFQs, obtain competitive supplier quotes, and evaluate suppliers based on cost, lead time, quality, availability, and performance. Negotiate pricing, delivery commitments, minimum order quantities, payment terms, and other commercial terms when appropriate. Create, issue, and maintain accurate purchase orders in the ERP/MRP system. Manage open purchase orders from placement through delivery. Proactively follow up with suppliers and expedite critical materials before shortages affect production. Identify material shortages, extended lead times, supplier capacity issues, price increases, and other supply-chain risks early. Maintain accurate supplier pricing, lead times, order quantities, delivery dates, and purchasing information in the ERP/MRP system. Keep material costs current so Operations, Finance, and Estimating have reliable information for job costing, planning, and customer quotations. Review BOMs and purchasing requirements before placing orders and work with Engineering when specifications, revisions, quantities, or approved sources are unclear. Support new product introductions and engineering changes by sourcing new components, obtaining pricing and lead times, and identifying supply risks. Develop alternate sources for critical or high-risk materials where appropriate. Monitor supplier performance for on-time delivery, quality, responsiveness, pricing, and lead-time reliability. Work closely with Production, Planning, Engineering, Quality, Inventory, and Operations to resolve material and supplier issues quickly. Purchase appropriate quantities to support production while minimizing excess, obsolete, and slow-moving inventory. Identify opportunities for cost reduction, alternate sourcing, improved lead times, and supplier consolidation. Maintain organized purchasing records, including quotations, purchase orders, supplier acknowledgements, pricing history, and supplier communications. Document and escalate sole-source, customer-directed, or other purchasing exceptions when required. Skills & Knowledge Manufacturing purchasing, sourcing, and supplier management. RFQs, quote analysis, cost comparison, and supplier negotiation. BOMs, material requirements, part revisions, and purchasing specifications. Purchase order management, supplier follow-up, expediting, and shortage resolution. ERP/MRP systems and accurate purchasing, pricing, and delivery data. Supplier performance, lead times, inventory control, and supply-chain risk. Alternate sourcing and cost-reduction opportunities. Strong organization, problem-solving, communication, and follow-through. Ability to work cross-functionally with Production, Engineering, Quality, Inventory, Operations, and Finance. Experience with cable assemblies, wire harnesses, electronics, electromechanical, or contract manufacturing preferred. Required Qualifications 4+ years of purchasing, buying, procurement, or supply-chain experience in a manufacturing environment. Experience purchasing direct materials, production components, or outside manufacturing services. Experience using an ERP/MRP system. Working knowledge of BOMs, supplier lead times, material requirements, and inventory considerations. Experience issuing RFQs, evaluating supplier quotes, placing purchase orders, and managing open orders through delivery. Experience working directly with suppliers on pricing, shortages, late deliveries, and delivery commitments. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, production-driven environment. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and standard business software. Ability to work full-time, on-site. Preferred Qualifications 5+ years of manufacturing purchasing or procurement experience. Experience in cable assemblies, wire harnesses, electronics, electromechanical, or contract manufacturing. Experience supporting high-mix, low-volume or build-to-print manufacturing. Experience with supplier negotiation, alternate sourcing, cost reduction, and shortage management. Ability to read engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Experience supporting NPI or engineering changes. Experience in aerospace, defense, medical, or other regulated manufacturing environments. Familiarity with
ISO 9001, AS9100, ISO
13485, IPC, UL, RoHS, or export-control requirements. Associate or bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Business, Operations, Manufacturing, or a related field. Work Environment This is a full-time, on-site position. The role operates primarily in an office environment but requires regular interaction with Production, Inventory, Engineering, Quality, and Operations. The position involves frequent use of ERP/MRP systems, spreadsheets, email, and telephone communication with suppliers, along with occasional time on the production floor to verify material status or resolve purchasing and receiving issues. Candidates must be comfortable working in a fast-moving manufacturing environment where customer demand, production priorities, and material requirements can change. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds when necessary and comply with applicable facility safety, PPE, and ESD requirements. Quality & Compliance Environment The company operates in a regulated manufacturing environment. Purchasing activities must follow applicable customer, engineering, quality, supplier, documentation, and export-control requirements. Depending on the applicable customer or product program, requirements may include standards or regulations related toISO, AS9100, ISO
13485, IPC, RoHS, UL, and U.S. export controls. The Buyer is responsible for ensuring purchase orders accurately communicate applicable sourcing, specification, certification, and documentation requirements and for escalating questions to Engineering or Quality when requirements are unclear. Export Control This position involve access to technical information controlled under U.S. export-control laws.
