Job Title:
Coater Operator - 1st Shift Job Description The Coater Operator sets up and operates a production coater to run roll-based materials according to specifications and quality standards. This role prepares raw materials, performs roll and material changes, monitors product quality, and works closely with team members to ensure safe, efficient, and accurate production on a first-shift schedule. Responsibilities Review and follow set-up sheets, checklists, and standard operating procedures to ensure the coater is correctly configured for each scheduled production run. Use the provided radio to maintain continuous communication and coordination with the operator at the opposite end of the coater. Perform splices and complete raw material changes, including adhesive or other coatings, as required for each job. Change product rolls as needed and ensure completed rolls are properly labeled, handled, and stored in designated carts or racks. Operate coater controls and related equipment in accordance with established best practices to consistently produce products that meet quality standards. Monitor product quality during production and adjust machine settings within defined parameters to maintain specifications. Prepare raw materials for use following standard operating procedures, including inspecting materials for damage caused by handling. Report any material damage, equipment issues, or process concerns to the workflow supervisor promptly. Support machine set-up activities, including threading material through the machine and verifying correct alignment and tension of rolls. Assist with basic troubleshooting of the coater and associated equipment to minimize downtime and maintain production flow. Follow all safety guidelines and housekeeping standards to maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area. Collaborate with team members and participate in cross-training opportunities on different machines as needed. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience operating production machinery or similar equipment. Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and comfort working with industrial machinery. Experience with machine set-up, including adjusting controls, aligning materials, and preparing equipment for production. Ability to perform basic troubleshooting on mechanical equipment to resolve minor issues. Capability to monitor moving rolls and web-based materials while maintaining focus on quality and safety. Ability to follow written set-up sheets, checklists, and standard operating procedures accurately. Strong communication skills to use radios and coordinate effectively with co-workers. Reliability and punctuality in a deadline-driven production environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with web press, flexographic printing, carpeting rolls, or similar roll-fed machinery is a strong plus. Experience in operating equipment that requires loading and monitoring the movement of rolls through a machine. Willingness to cross-train and learn multiple machines within the production area. Comfort working in a warm manufacturing environment around running machinery. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is a 1st shift position, working Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The role is based in a manufacturing facility where machines generate heat, and temperatures can reach up to approximately 90 degrees; the environment is consistently warm rather than cold. The culture is deadline-intensive and highly punctual, with an emphasis on arriving early and being fully prepared at the start of the shift. The dress code is casual, with appropriate shorts permitted, and steel-toed shoes are required for safety. The facility operates roll-based machinery such as coaters and related equipment, and the work involves standing, moving around the production floor, and closely monitoring running materials throughout the shift. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Middleton, WI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.
