The California department of Transportation (Caltrans) is seeking to hire a student assistant to work under the close supervision of a Senior Transportation Engineer. In a learning capacity, the student assistant will assist with a combination of laboratory and related field tests on materials such as soils, aggregates, asphalt mixes, asphalt binder, asphalt emulsion, Portland cement concrete, cement, and all related construction materials at the Southern Regional Laboratory (SRL). Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. This means that either University Enterprises, Inc. or the employee can, at any time, terminate the employment relationship at will, with or without cause. 16 per hour. Minimum Qualifications Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. Knowledge of the basic principles of physics; chemistry and mathematics as applied to civil engineering; properties and uses of engineering construction materials; methods and equipment of engineering construction. Knowledge of contract administration procedures. Ability to communicate proficiently, directly and tactfully; both orally and in written form; information to construction staff of all levels and experience. Must be able to convey to appropriate responders and communicate responses back. Ability to convey to management and staff the need for clarity, to remedy deficiencies, to recommend correction, or request missing information and supporting documents. Ability to analyze. - In a learning capacity, the student assistant will learn and assist with field and laboratory sampling and testing on highway construction materials, including but not limited to asphalt binder, asphalt emulsion, asphalt concrete, soils, aggregates, aggregate base, Portland cement concrete, lean concrete base, etc.
Lift up to 50 pounds when testing and sampling construction materials and moving equipment. Learn and perform all the applicable laboratory and field tests necessary for the purpose of verifying conformance to Standard Construction Plans, Standard Specifications, Standard Special Provisions, etc. Receive training and obtain and maintain required certifications and competencies for various disciplines such as California Test Methods (CTM) series 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, and 600, Caltrans Lab Procedures (LP), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM, and Uniform Building Code (UBC). 25%
- In a learning capacity, the student assistant will will learn and assist or participate in Caltrans and AASHTO proficiency sample testing and onsite assessments.
Learn to gather and compile data, prepare reports, charts, and graphics. Organize and arrange data to produce effective and acceptable work in conformance with the laboratory Quality Management System (QMS). Learn quality assurance practices to ensure project deliverables meet all requirements and expectations. 20%
- In a learning capacity, the student assistant will learn and assist in performing calibration of testing equipment used in the laboratory and the field. Notify supervisor of non-functioning equipment. Learn and assist in maintaining and updating the Laboratory Quality Management System (QMS) and Caltrans Laboratory Accreditation Manual (CLAM). 5%
