Job Description

Quality Engineer - Precast & Prestressed Concrete Manufacturing Job Summary The Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all precast and prestressed concrete products meet established quality standards, project specifications, and applicable industry codes (ACI, PCI, ASTM). This role combines hands-on quality control, materials testing, vendor management, and continuous process improvement to support the production of safe, durable, and high-performing concrete components. The Quality Engineer works closely with production, engineering, and procurement teams to maintain compliance, reduce defects, and uphold the company's commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Key Responsibilities Quality Control & Inspection Conduct daily floor inspections of production processes, formwork, reinforcement placement, prestressing operations, and finished products. Verify that products meet project drawings, specifications, and tolerances before release for shipment. Document non-conformances, initiate corrective actions, and follow up to ensure resolution. Maintain detailed inspection records, quality reports, and traceability documentation. Ensure compliance with PCI, ACI, ASTM, OSHA, and customer-specific quality standards. Concrete Testing & Lab Work Collect, prepare, and test concrete samples in the on-site laboratory (slump, air content, unit weight, temperature, compressive strength, etc.). Maintain and calibrate lab testing equipment to ensure accurate results. Analyze test data, identify trends, and recommend mix design adjustments as needed. Coordinate with third-party testing agencies when required. Vendor & Materials Management Source, evaluate, and qualify vendors for raw materials including cement, aggregates, admixtures, rebar, prestressing strand, and embeds. Communicate with suppliers regarding material specifications, certifications, delivery schedules, and quality issues. Review mill certifications, test reports, and material data sheets to ensure compliance with project requirements. Build and maintain strong vendor relationships to support cost, quality, and delivery objectives. Production Support & Continuous Improvement Assist production staff on the plant floor with physical labor and hands-on tasks as needed to support throughput, training, and problem-solving. Partner with production supervisors and engineers to troubleshoot quality issues and implement preventive measures. Support root cause analysis investigations and lead continuous improvement initiatives. Train production personnel on quality standards, inspection procedures, and best practices. Documentation & Compliance Maintain quality manuals, inspection checklists, and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Support internal and external audits, including PCI plant certification audits. Track key quality metrics (KPIs) and report findings to management. QualificationsRequired Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Materials Science, or related field (relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree). 2+ years of quality control or engineering experience, preferably in precast/prestressed concrete or a related construction materials industry. Working knowledge of ACI, PCI, and ASTM standards. Ability to read and interpret structural drawings, shop drawings, and specifications. Proficiency with MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); experience with quality management software a plus. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and communication abilities. Preferred ACI Field Testing Technician - Grade I certification (or ability to obtain). PCI Quality Control Personnel Certification (Level I/II) or willingness to obtain. Experience working in a manufacturing or production plant environment. Physical Requirements & Work Environment Work is performed in both office, lab, and manufacturing plant environments, including outdoor yards. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs, stand and walk for extended periods, climb ladders, and work in varying weather conditions. Willing and able to assist with physical labor on the production floor as needed. Required to wear PPE including safety glasses, steel-toe boots, gloves, and hearing protection.
