Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Division of Critical Materials at the Ames National Laboratory is searching for qualified candidates for a Research Technologist I position. The successful candidate will conduct magnetic materials development under the guidance of Project Principal Investigators, supporting high-priority research within Ames National Laboratory's state-of-the-art facilities. Primary responsibilities include the synthesis, processing, testing, and characterization of advanced magnetic materials. As a vital member of a US Department of Energy-funded research on critical materials, the incumbent will contribute to the delivery of critical materials solutions. The ideal candidate must demonstrate robust technical expertise in powder metallurgical processing, paired with strong self-motivation and critical thinking. Essential to this role are effective communication skills and the ability to thrive in a cross-disciplinary, collaborative environment. The successful candidate is expected to foster a collegial atmosphere while maintaining the highest standards of research integrity and ethical conduct.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in powder metallurgical process Experience with alloy development, melting, casting, and melt-spinning processes Experience in working with flammable fine metallic powder Demonstrated capability to fabricate bulk magnets and other magnet materials Ability to learn and use materials characterization tools such as magnetometers, XRD, XRF, TGA, DSC, SEM/EDS, universal materials testing systems, and electrical resistivity testing set-up, etc. Experience in maintaining research lab equipment Experience working under tight deadlines
