Job Description

The QC Inspector monitors shop production for fit-up and welding of structural steel members and parts, such as building members, columns, joists, frames, stairs, railings and other parts. They are responsible for the implementation of the SME Quality Control program and all SME standards. Inspectors need a good understanding of the codes and standards of the industry and SME's manufacturing system. There are three categories of Inspector QC-A Inspector having and maintaining an AWS CWI with two ASNT Level II Non-destructive Testing (NDT) method, Certifications.
QC-B SME
in-house Visual Inspection certification, with minimum of one ASNT level II NDT method certification or an individual holding and maintaining an AWS CWI without any
ASNT NDT
method certifications. QC-C Inspector in-training or one holding a single in-house certification.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. The Inspector will review drawings for accuracy and provide interpretation for production personnel where needed. The Inspector will monitor equipment for compliance, ensure personnel are qualified and certified to operate the equipment. Perform qualification testing where needed for welders. The Inspector will monitor welders to ensure compliance with SME WPS variables and proper control of welding consumables. The Inspector will perform 100% visual welding inspection for weld quality, size and location. Provide dimensional verifications of fabricated members, as time allows, for compliance with industry standards. Complete documentation for these inspections. Complete Nonconformance reports and follow up on corrective actions. Perform non destructive testing of welds and material when qualified. Assist Production supervision in-training of fitter/welders on quality related issues. Communicate concerns and non conforming conditions to production personnel. Perform additional assignments as directed by the QA Manager. Review and keep current with new editions of the codes and standards. Ensure compliance with the SME Quality Assurance Manual and the Quality Program Procedure and Instructions Manual. Perform their duties in a timely manner to ensure contract scheduling issues. Maintaining inspection and test equipment in proper order, ensuring equipment is properly calibrated for the work performed. Keep work area orderly and clean. Comply with the code of ethics for Inspectors as provided by the American Welding Society.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma, GED or equivalent, and 1 year of previous Inspection experience or two years as fitter/welder. Must be dependable, reliable, and mature enough to handle equipment in a safe and sensible manner. Ability to work for extended hours in a physically challenging environment. Must be physically fit. The ability to understand the working mechanism of tools and machinery under their responsibility. Ability to communicate machine problems, production numbers, and quality issues with proper individuals. Attention to detail; able to maintain production reports; determine product quality and identify subtle changes in production product. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing, if necessary, with co-workers, maintenance, supervisors, and inspectors.
