Position Summary The 3rd Shift Electrical Operational Technician is responsible for performing simulated operational testing and verification of electrical and electronic controls used in Gorman-Rupp's above- and below-ground lift station systems. This role ensures that all control systems, pump equipment, and accessory components function according to engineering specifications, quality standards, and operational requirements. The Technician conducts detailed testing, troubleshooting, floor wiring, and occasional control panel wiring, working from engineering drawings, schematics, and test instructions. This position requires strong technical aptitude, attention to detail, safe work practices, and the ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, supervisors, and fellow employees. This role plays an essential part in ensuring that electrical systems meet performance, reliability, and safety expectations prior to shipment or installation. Essential Functions and Basic Duties 1. Testing, Inspection, and Troubleshooting Perform simulated operational tests for electrical and electronic controls supporting lift station systems. Read and interpret work orders, wiring diagrams, schematics, specifications, and test requirements to perform duties accurately. Utilize hand tools and test equipment including multimeters, continuity checkers, amprobes, crimpers, soldering tools, portable power tools, and gauges. Work with power supply setups up to 575 volts, including occasional 50-cycle testing. Conduct visual and functional checks of control components—including starters, relays, sensors, breakers, switches, alarms, and timers—to ensure proper installation and performance. Diagnose issues in electrical circuits, identify defective components, and make necessary adjustments or replacements. Collaborate with Engineering to implement circuitry changes and modifications as needed. Verify mechanical checks associated with pump and engine-driven units prior to full operational testing. Document test results, adjust settings such as time-delay controls, and ensure that system performance meets specified requirements. 2. Floor Wiring and Electrical Assembly Plan and perform floor wiring tasks for pump motors, control panels, engine drives, and accessory equipment. Cut, route, identify, and terminate wiring; perform continuity checks to verify correct installation. Diagnose and correct wiring errors, including those identified in work performed by others. Occasionally perform control panel wiring involving the layout, assembly, and wiring of electronic components. Conduct continuity and control-voltage checks to ensure proper circuit function and correct any issues identified. Support team members in resolving difficult wiring or circuit troubleshooting challenges. Perform wiring and testing tasks for customer repair orders involving a wide range of electrical and electronic components. 3. Workflow, Quality, and Documentation Maintain accurate records including test data, production information, wiring changes, and time reporting. Ensure work complies with engineering requirements, company standards, and applicable electrical practices. Report faulty materials, equipment issues, and unusual conditions promptly to supervision. Follow established procedures for documentation, workflow, and quality checks. 4. Communication and Coordination Work cooperatively with supervisors, engineers, and fellow employees to meet production and testing goals. Communicate test findings, circuit issues, process improvements, and recurring problems to appropriate personnel. Provide assistance to coworkers when addressing complex electrical or control-related issues. Participate in occasional travel with field service as assigned. 5. Safety and Housekeeping Follow all company safety policies, electrical safety practices, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements. Operate hoists, powered industrial trucks, and other equipment safely as required. Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work area. Exercise caution when working with high-voltage test setups and electrical components. 6. Additional Responsibilities Operate a PC for documentation, recordkeeping, and job-tracking tasks. Prepare and complete all necessary paperwork related to assigned projects. Move materials and components as required for job assignments. Perform other duties or special projects as assigned by supervision. Education/Certification High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional technical or electronics training preferred. Experience Required Three years of experience wiring industrial control panels using engineering schematics with responsibility for verifying own work; OR Successful completion of an accredited, comprehensive electronics training program. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong understanding of electrical wiring practices, control circuits, and schematic interpretation. Skilled in using electrical tools and test equipment such as multimeters, continuity testers, crimpers, and soldering tools. Effective troubleshooting abilities for diagnosing wiring issues, component failures, and circuit problems. High attention to detail when wiring, labeling, and performing inspections. Ability to read and follow work orders, diagrams, test procedures, and technical documentation. Good communication and teamwork skills for coordinating with supervisors, engineers, and coworkers. Organized, dependable, and able to manage multiple tasks in a changing work environment. Basic computer skills for documentation, test data entry, and work order tracking. Strong commitment to safety practices, hazard awareness, and adherence to electrical safety procedures. Physical Requirements and Work Conditions Mobility and Physical Activity Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and occasional kneeling throughout the workday. May require climbing onto small platforms or step stools to access equipment. Lifting and Material Handling Regularly lift and carry 20-40 lbs; team or mechanical assistance required for heavier items. Use hoists, carts, and powered industrial trucks as needed. Dexterity and Fine Motor Skills Frequent use of hands for wiring, terminating leads, and operating tools. Requires precise manual dexterity for small components and detailed adjustments.
