Job Title:
CMT Technician Job Description This role offers the opportunity to become the first full-time Construction Materials Testing (CMT) technician in a new Midland, TX shop. You will perform field and shop testing of construction materials, support projects in the oil and gas and data center sectors, and play a key role in establishing processes and standards for a growing office. The position combines hands-on testing work, field documentation, and collaboration with project teams to help ensure quality and compliance on local West Texas projects. Responsibilities Perform field sampling and testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates in accordance with applicable standards and procedures. and end of the day to complete required testing. Observe and document construction activities, including erosion control measures and stormwater systems, to help verify compliance with project specifications and environmental requirements. Assist with inspection of site conditions to ensure adherence to project specifications and relevant environmental regulations. Prepare clear and accurate daily field reports, logs, and documentation of testing results using pen-and-paper methods for subsequent digitization. Collect material samples from project sites and transport them to laboratories for further analysis as needed. Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and contractors on site to support project quality control and resolve field issues related to materials testing. Maintain, calibrate, and operate testing equipment in a safe and efficient manner, following all applicable safety procedures and guidelines. Support the development of the new shop's workflows and standards as the first full-time employee, helping to establish best practices for future team members. Uphold all safety protocols on job sites and in the shop, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to OSHA guidelines. Essential Skills ACI certification required for concrete testing. Hands-on experience as a CMT technician or in construction materials testing. Ability to perform field sampling and testing of soils, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates. Ability to accurately observe and document construction and environmental activities. Strong attention to detail when preparing daily field reports, logs, and test documentation. Capability to maintain and operate testing equipment safely and effectively. Willingness to work in both shop and field environments, including oil and gas and data center project sites. Commitment to following safety procedures and applicable regulations on every assignment. Additional Skills & Qualifications OSHA 10 certification. OSHA 30 certification. ICC certification. Special Inspection License. Experience supporting oil and gas or data center projects. Ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, engineers, and contractors. Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tests, samples, and daily reporting. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based out of a Midland, TX shop with frequent travel to local West Texas project sites, primarily in the oil and gas and data center sectors. You will split time between shop work—such as breaking down and testing concrete cylinders—and field work at active construction sites. The environment is hands-on and safety-focused, involving the use of construction materials testing equipment and standard personal protective gear. Work is steady, with opportunities for optional overtime depending on project demands. Field documentation is completed with pen and paper and then submitted to the office for digitization, creating a balance between physical testing tasks and reporting responsibilities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Odessa, TX. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $24.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
