Job Description

Subsidiary Steel Dynamics Overview Technician for physical metallurgy laboratory to support product development, Continuous improvement, and quality initiatives. Conduct sample preparations and metallurgical analyses and communicate results to mill metallurgical staff. Responsibilities Perform metallurgical laboratory analyses of steel products and associated processes Maintain laboratory safety, laboratory equipment and calibration to appropriate standards Disseminate metallurgical analysis knowledge withing metallurgical laboratories Support projects pertinent to new products, productivity & continuous improvement Support safety initiatives throughout the mill Analyze and assess new and existing products for metallurgical conformity to customer requirements Assist departmental metallurgists on interpretation of laboratory results Support mill production trials with departmental metallurgists and quality staff Assist product non-conformance analyses with technical service colleagues Communicate analysis results and suggestions to operations for continuous improvement Qualifications 2 - or 4-year degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, Metallurgical, Electrical, or Industrial) or related technical field Excellent and proven problem-solving skills Excellent technical communication skills Capability to prioritize and multi-task Self-motivated with strong orientation for continuous improvement
Preferred Skills:
2+ years Industrial Laboratory Experience Data analysis & management skills (SQL, Access, MS Office, SPC, MiniTab, etc.) Experience with both optical and electron microscopy techniques Experience with metallurgical sample preparation Experience with metals chemistry analysis techniques (OES, XRF) 4 year Material Science/Metallurgical Engineering Degree Experience in steel product development, rolling and/or coating operations Knowledge of ASTM, SAE, VDA, API, ISO and IATF standards Ability to implement and conduct training for operation Steel Dynamics, Inc., and all affiliated entities are equal opportunity employers.
