Model Maker RCO Engineering - 3.3 Roseville, MI Job Details 22 hours ago Qualifications Measuring tapes Power tools for woodworking Shop math High school diploma or GED Machine operation safety procedures Shop-based carpentry Full Job Description Model Maker Position Overview The Model Maker will apply woodworking and shop skills to create high-precision master models used in manufacturing plastic and composite parts for industries like automotive and aerospace. This role blends traditional craftsmanship (cutting, shaping, sanding, assembly) with exposure to modern manufacturing methods. It's an ideal opportunity for woodworking students looking to grow into advanced prototyping and tooling careers. RCO Engineering works with several industries providing for a variety of projects—from one-of-a-kind prototypes to production tooling—within a collaborative team environment. Key Responsibilities Woodworking & Pattern Building Construct precision patterns, molds, and models using wood, resin, and composite materials Safely operate shop equipment including band saws, table saws, drill presses, and sanders Shape, assemble, and finish parts to meet tight dimensional tolerances Design Interpretation & Modeling Read and interpret engineering prints and blueprints Assist in modifying or refining designs to translate them into physical parts Build accurate models using measured layouts and shop techniques Prototyping & Tooling Build prototype models, fixtures, and tooling for low-volume production Support creation of molds for vacuum forming, laminating, and casting Assist in integrating 3D printed parts into tooling or use them in pattern builds Craftsmanship & Finishing Produce high-quality display models and presentation pieces Apply attention to detail in sanding, surfacing, and finishing processes Shop Operations & Teamwork Maintain a clean, safe, and organized workspace Collaborate with experienced pattern and model makers Take direction from supervisors while also managing independent tasks Qualifications & Requirements High School diploma Basic experience using woodshop tools and equipment Ability to read a tape measure and perform basic shop math Strong attention to detail and pride in craftsmanship Willingness to learn new materials and manufacturing techniques Ability to work safely with machinery and follow shop protocols Preferred Skills & Experience Currently enrolled in or recently completed a Woodworking, Manufacturing, Skilled Trades, or Technical program Understanding of precision work (tight tolerances, accuracy) Employees are encouraged to build and maintain a personal toolbox Familiarity with: Blueprint reading Shop layout and measuring techniques Exposure to: Plastics, resins, or composite materials Vacuum forming or mold-making concepts Responsibilities may evolve as you gain experience and take on new challenges
