The Town of Ashland seeks qualified, experienced, and energetic candidates for the position of Light Equipment Operator in the Cemetery, Parks, & Trees Division within the Department of Public Works.
Salary Range:
Grade H03 $23.8988/hr.
  • $26.2244/hr, DOQ Full range for H03 is ($23.8988/hr
  • $32.0142/hr)
  • Upon successful completion of probation and the required licensing listed below, the range can move to Grade H04 $25.6563/hr
  • $34.1864/hr. Additional opportunities for growth may exist if the candidate already has licensing, or upon receipt of licensing, which may allow the candidate to move into grade H04, which starts at $25.6563/hr. (The full range of H04 is $25.6563/hr

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
The Light Equipment Operator primarily performs work related to construction and maintenance of municipal cemetery, parks, and green spaces under the supervision of the Working Foreman. The job responsibilities may include the following or other duties as assigned: Drive or operate vehicles and equipment engaged in construction, maintenance, snow removal, and various other projects and activities. Works with small engine equipment as well as hand tools. Maintain cemeteries, parks, athletic fields, and other vegetated areas. Perform tree pruning/removal and flail mowing. Service and follow preventative maintenance on equipment or vehicles being operated such as checking oil, water and battery levels, tire pressure, etc. Performs all other duties as assigned by the Working Foreman. This position is required to be available for all snow operations and any other emergencies during or outside regular work hours.
ATTRIBUTES AND QUALIFICATIONS
The Light Equipment Operator position requires a High School degree or equivalent plus a minimum knowledge of basic construction practices. Additionally, candidates must be able to: Follow directions on projects Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, coworkers, and the general public. Communicate effectively, confirming understanding if direction is given. Understand and properly operate tools and equipment. Understand and follow all safety procedures related to job responsibilities. Candidates must be able to obtain the following: Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B Permit Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer with a 2A, 1C endorsement The Light Equipment Operator is a full-time, 40 hour/week, non-exempt position represented by the DPW Union. Salary is based on the chart in the collective bargaining agreement for grade H03, which ranges from $23.8988/hr. to $32.0142/hr.
