Job Description Title Composite Technicians Department(s) All Reports to Department Head Job Summary SMI Composites is seeking experienced Composite Technicians with hands-on experience working with composite materials, specifically carbon fiber, to fabricate, repair, and finish tooling components for aerospace, automotive, marine, or industrial applications. This role requires exceptional attention to detail, strong craftsmanship, and the ability to work to tight tolerances in a fast-paced production environment. Responsibilities & Duties Assessing surfaces and products to determine if they are ready for coating and need further preparation Read and interpret work instructions to accurately prepare and laminate, trim, bond, or polish composite parts. Perform hand layup and vacuum bagging techniques using carbon fiber and other composite materials. Prepare molds, tooling surfaces, and materials prior to lamination, including cleaning, sealing, and applying release agents. Mix and apply resins, adhesives, and fillers according to specifications. Trim, fit, and assemble composite components to exact tolerances using hand tools and power tools. Conduct post-cure operations, including demolding, sanding, and surface preparation for finishing Complying with environmental regulations regarding the use of specific products, and managing waste products Physical Requirements o Must be able to walk, sit and stand for extended periods of time o Constant and repetitive movement of fingers, hands, and wrists Qualifications Required Attention to detail and a steady hand for meticulous work. Understanding safety protocols to avoid hazardous chemicals. Proficiency in vacuum bagging, wet layup, and/or prepreg lamination processes. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and manufacturing documentation. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work. Manual dexterity and ability to work with precision tools. Basic math skills for measuring, mixing ratios, and material calculations. Ability to lift to 30 pounds and work in standing positions for extended periods. Preferred 2+ years of hands-on experience in composite lamination, preferably with carbon fiber tooling. Experience in aerospace, automotive, or marine composite manufacturing. Knowledge of autoclave or oven cure processes. Familiarity with composite tooling repair techniques. Strong attention to detail and appreciation for quality. Ability to follow instructions and safety guidelines meticulously. Physical stamina and strength to handle long hours standing or in repetitive movements. Effective communication skills and teamwork-oriented attitude. At least 2+ years of painting and coating for a manufacturer. Work Environment Shop floor production environment with exposure to resins, adhesives, and solvents. Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE) required (gloves, safety glasses, respirator as needed). May require occasional overtime or weekend shifts to meet production deadlines.
