This role requires a high level of technical skill, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret blueprints and specifications to ensure tools meet quality, safety, and production standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Studies specifications, engineering blueprints, tools orders, and shop data and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost. Applies algebraic and geometric formulas and standard tool engineering data to develop tool configuration. Computes dimensions, plans layout, needs to know the layout concept of blank, progressive, and form tooling, and determines assembly method and sequence of operations. Draws preliminary sketches, prepares layout, designs tools, and details drawings. Modifies tool designs according to trial or production service data to improve tool life or performance. Measures, marks, and scribes metal stock for machining. Sets up and operates machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, shaper, and grinder, to machine parts, and verifies conformance of machined parts to specifications. Needs to know basic concept of CNC machine and wire EDM. Verifies dimensions, alignments, and clearances. Heat treats tools or parts. Connects wiring and hydraulic lines to install electrical and hydraulic components. Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and recommends design modifications regarding construction and function of part. Develop specifications from general descriptions for specialty tools and draws or sketches design of product. Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Licensed Tool Maker is an asset Must have basic tools. Four (4) to five (5) years' experience as a tool maker in a fabrication or automotive manufacturing environment preferred Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical theory is an asset Ability to use Mig, Tig, and Arc welding equipment is preferred Ability to use milling machine, lathe, and grinder. Ability to perform basic pipe and hose installations. Ability to perform basic electrical troubleshooting such as changing fuses and switches preferred Ability to work with minimum supervision.
