Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY
Tubular Steel USA is looking for a Roll Tooling Technician to support our RS100 and RS40 tube mill lines. This is a hands-on shop floor position focused on polishing roll tooling, taking measurements, recording wear data, and keeping tooling sets organized and staged for production. If you take pride in physical work and paying attention to the details, this role is a good fit. Why This Role Matters Our mills run continuously and good tooling condition directly affects the quality of tube we produce. This person keeps our rolls measured, polished, and ready to go back on the line.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Surface Finishing & Polishing Receive cleaned roll tooling sets from the RS100 and RS40 mill lines following changeovers and verify they are ready for inspection and finishing Polish roll surfaces using appropriate abrasive media and lapping compounds to restore finish and remove surface defects Identify and flag tooling with pitting, galling, cracking, or excessive wear for quarantine and evaluation Select and apply appropriate abrasive media and lapping compounds based on roll material, surface condition, and required finish Dimensional Inspection & Wear Tracking Measure roll tooling using micrometers and calipers to determine remaining usable diameter and groove profile condition Log all inspection measurements into the tooling gauge reference workbook and wear tracking records with date, technician, and mill line identified Compare measurements against nominal specifications and flag tooling approaching minimum diameter thresholds Record tooling reconditioning history in the tracking workbook so we know what has been done to each set and when Tooling Staging & Organization Stage complete tooling sets by size, schedule, and production priority so changeover crews have kitted, ready-to-install rolls Maintain organized, labeled storage of all roll tooling sets — clean sets separated from used sets at all times Manage tooling inventory records including quantity on hand, sets in service, sets in cleaning queue, and sets sent for reconditioning Coordinate with maintenance and production supervisors to ensure correct tooling sets are available ahead of scheduled changeovers Lathe Operation (Light Reconditioning Support) Operate engine lathe to perform light facing, chamfering, and bore cleanup on tooling components as directed Work to documented tolerances and surface finish requirements as defined by engineering; flag out-of-spec conditions to the Maintenance Manager rather than proceeding independently Keep lathe and surrounding work area clean and organized; perform routine lubrication and maintenance per equipment schedule Documentation & Communication Complete all tooling inspection and service records accurately at time of work — no after-the-fact logging Communicate tooling status, inventory shortfalls, and quality concerns to the Maintenance Manager in a timely manner Speak up when you see a better way to organize, store, or handle tooling — we want your input Partner with the Maintenance Manager to author and formalize Standard Operating Procedures for tooling inspection, polishing, staging, and inventory — this department is building its documentation from the ground up and this role has direct input into how that work gets defined
QUALIFICATIONS
Required High school diploma or GED 1 or more years of experience in a manufacturing, machining, or industrial maintenance environment Demonstrated ability to use micrometers, calipers, and other precision hand measuring tools accurately Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with heavy tooling components (rolls range from 5 to 60+ lbs) Strong attention to detail — dimensional data entry and wear documentation must be accurate Comfortable working in an environment where formal procedures are still being developed; willing to help document and standardize the work you perform Reliable attendance and ability to work a consistent first-shift schedule Forklift certified or able to become certified — required for moving tooling sets around the facility Overhead crane experience or willingness to be trained — tooling sets are moved by crane and safe operation is a daily part of this job Preferred Experience in a tube mill, roll forming, stamping, or similar metal forming environment Basic engine lathe operation — facing, turning, chamfering Familiarity with tooling polishing media, lapping compounds, or surface finishing techniques on hardened steel Proficiency with Microsoft Excel for data entry into established tracking workbooks
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent lifting of tooling sets — must be capable of lifting and maneuvering up to 50 lbs unassisted; forklift or overhead crane required for heavier sets Prolonged standing on concrete floors throughout shift Repetitive hand and wrist motion during polishing and measurement tasks Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to coolants, metal chips, noise, and temperature variation Manual dexterity sufficient to operate precision measuring instruments and lathe controls
