Tool and Die Maker Job Description The Tool and Die Maker builds, repairs, and maintains precision dies and fixtures using state-of-the-art technology to meet exacting customer specifications. This role ensures that all tooling meets very tight tolerances and high quality standards while supporting production through effective troubleshooting, die maintenance, and collaboration with press setup and manufacturing teams. Responsibilities Build, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, and debug progressive dies and new tooling to meet strict quality and tolerance requirements. Ensure accuracy and quality on all jobs, consistently meeting internal standards and customer specifications. Operate and understand the use of hand tools, grinding machinery, milling machinery, drill presses, lathes, band saws, heat treating ovens, optical comparators, various measuring devices, and die hoists. Apply a working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (S.P.C.) to support quality and process consistency. Perform mathematical and geometric functions and apply strong mechanical aptitude in daily work. Read and interpret blueprints to determine materials, machines, and components required to make, modify, or repair tools and dies. Assist in press setup as required to support efficient production operations. Operate the computer-based die maintenance program and other required computer processes to document and track work. Utilize knowledge of CNC and wire EDM processes in the design, manufacture, and repair of tooling. Complete required data entry activities accurately and in a timely manner. Cooperate and communicate effectively with team members to complete projects on time and meet production needs. Follow all safety procedures and regulations at all times. Maintain a tidy, organized, and clean workstation. Use and maintain personal tools of the trade as required for the role. Perform other related duties as needed to support the ongoing needs of the organization. Essential Skills Proven ability to build, repair, maintain, troubleshoot, and debug progressive dies and new tooling. Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and translate them into precise tooling requirements. Working knowledge of Statistical Process Control (S.P.C.). Proficiency in operating hand tools, grinding machinery, milling machinery, drill presses, lathes, band saws, heat treating ovens, optical comparators, measuring devices, and die hoists. Ability to perform mathematical and geometric functions relevant to tool and die work. Solid mechanical aptitude and understanding of tooling and die operations. Ability to analyze blueprints and determine required materials, machines, and components for tools and dies. Understanding of computer operations and tool room equipment, including die maintenance software. Knowledge of CNC machining and wire EDM processes. Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills. High attention to accuracy, detail, and adherence to due dates. Good communication skills and effective teamwork skills to complete projects on time. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and push/pull 100 to 2500 lbs using die carts, as required in a manufacturing environment. Additional Skills & Qualifications Journeyman Certificate with 4 years of apprenticeship and two years of experience. Journeyman certification and 4 years of apprenticeship experience required. High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Experience with tool and die making, die repair, and tooling in a manufacturing environment. Hands-on experience with CNC and manual machining. Experience working with EDM and wire EDM equipment. Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with production and maintenance teams. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based in a standard manufacturing environment that is clean and not excessively dirty, with some noise and grinding dust present. The typical schedule is Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with an alternative shift of 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. available if needed. Work involves lifting up to 50 lbs and pushing or pulling 100 to 2500 lbs using die carts. Personal protective equipment is required, including protective shoes, safety glasses, a shop coat, and ear protection when working around loud noise. The position uses a range of manufacturing technologies and equipment, including CNC and manual machines, EDM and wire EDM, grinding machinery, milling machinery, lathes, drill presses, band saws, heat treating ovens, optical comparators, and various precision measuring devices.
