Job Overview:
The Water Utilities Operator II is an essential member of the Public Works/Utilities Department, tasked with overseeing the operation and maintenance of water facilities, including treatment plants, wells, boosters, and distribution systems. This role requires proficiency in managing water treatment processes and distribution efforts, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. The Operator II handles both routine inspections and intricate process adjustments, playing a critical role in maintaining the town's water quality and safeguarding public health.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee daily operations of water filtration plants, wells, boosters, and the distribution system.
- Perform routine and urgent maintenance duties, ensuring systems operate efficiently and within compliance guidelines.
- Conduct process control adjustments to respond to varying operational conditions.
- Maintain vigilance on permit and compliance requirements, promptly addressing potential violations.
- Manage chemical inventories and equipment necessary for system operations.
- Provide comprehensive documentation on permits and monitoring to senior operators and management.
- Perform systematic checks of all system components, including chlorinators, valves, and piping, to ensure optimal operation.
- Participate in the calibration and maintenance of meters and gauges, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Collect and analyze water samples regularly, maintaining rigorous records of water quality data.
- Contribute to the safety and maintenance protocols, ensuring a safe working environment for all staff.
- Develop and update standard operating procedures, training subordinate staff to ensure consistency and safety in operations.
Requirements:
Class A, B or C Colorado Plant Operator's Certificate and Level 1 or 2 water distribution certificate. High school diploma or equivalent. Direct daily operations of water filtration plants, wells, boosters, and distribution systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance. Oversee and perform necessary operational and process control adjustments to respond immediately to adverse conditions affecting process performance. Maintain vigilance on permit and compliance requirements, taking action to address potential violations and ensuring facility compliance in the absence of higher-level management. Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations, such as all CDPHE requirements, Colorado Primary Drinking Water Regulations, Lead and Copper Rules, and Cross Connection Rules. Manage inventory and ordering of necessary chemicals and equipment for system operations. Provide accurate and complete documentation regarding permits and monitoring requirements. Conduct routine checks and maintenance on chlorinators, valves, piping, and chemical feeders to ensure proper operation. Coordinate the preparation and monitoring of maintenance schedules for all relevant vehicles and equipment. Perform water quality sampling and lab analysis to ensure compliance with health and safety standards. Ensure regular testing of water at all critical points in the treatment process. Monitor operational data and maintain comprehensive records of system operations and maintenance. Calibrate, maintain, and repair meters and gauges, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. Develop and implement Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), training subordinate staff to ensure adherence to operational standards. Provide technical leadership and oversight for all junior water staff, offering training and conducting performance reviews.
