PLANT OPERATOR JOB DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES
Job Description The plant operator, under the direct supervision of the Plant Superintendent, will train for a variety of skilled technical duties and semi-skilled labor in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater plant, collection system and biosolids land application process. A plant operator performs adjustments and repairs to plant equipment, machinery and vehicles. Additionally, the plant operator must work closely with the Plant Superintendent, District Administrator and all other plant personnel. Must possess the ability to follow instructions, complete tasks in a timely fashion and interact with others (co-workers, Board Members, attorneys, engineers, contractors, auditors, customers and vendors,) in a professional manner. Education and Experience High School diploma required, with a strong interest in chemistry and biology desired. Must be able to attain and maintain, within one (1) year from date of hire, Colorado Class D Wastewater and Colorado Class I Wastewater Collection licenses Must have or be able to obtain a Colorado Class A Commercial Driver's License with an Air Brakes endorsement Must be able to maintain an acceptable driving record. Must be available for emergency on-call response for any plant emergencies that may arise. Work Environment The position includes bending, stooping, climbing, reaching, standing, walking, sitting and occasional lifting of up to 60 lbs. Sufficient strength, stamina and conditioning to work throughout the day are required under various outdoor weather conditions. Constant noise levels of plant machinery and equipment, such as blowers, belt presses, heavy equipment and machinery, lawn mowers and various hand-held tools. Must have tolerance to various levels of odors. Requires wearing of personal protective equipment, including but not limited to, respirator, ear protection, goggles, and hard hats. Essential Functions, Duties and Responsibilities Perform all aspects of the wastewater plant, collection system operations and all equipment. Work under the direct supervision of the Plant Superintendent. Work under the general guidance of the District Administrator and Board of Directors. Coordinate activities with Plant Superintendent to assure proper plant control. Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled labor tasks, which may involve general construction, maintenance and repair activities in connection with plant equipment, machinery and vehicles. Assist in maintaining daily log of operations. Document annual inventory of District's tools and equipment. Assist Plant Superintendent with repair and maintenance of wastewater plant operations, collection system and lift stations. Perform repair and maintenance work involving the safe and efficient operation of special power-driven equipment. Maintain a clean, safe and secure work environment. Perform housekeeping duties around the plant. Manage plant grounds, including but not limited to, snow removal, landscaping, fencing and painting. Report any mechanical and/or biological problems to the Plant Superintendent. Ensure that septic dewatering activities do not adversely affect plant performance or effluent discharge limitations. Maintain knowledge of the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) library of all chemicals in the plant property for safe use and emergency procedures. Maintain equipment, machinery and vehicles per manufacture's suggestions along with a written record of items completed. Make sure District property and equipment is properly maintained and used. Assist with repair and maintenance, jetting and line locates. Attend classes, as needed or required, to maintain and upgrade licenses, improve understanding of plant operation and for increased job performance. Follow and understand District Employee and Safety Manuals. Perform lab tests in absence of Lab Director or until a replacement can be found should the absence extend more than two weeks. Must be familiar with the District's Rules & Regulations. Locate District lines when required or requested. Follow all 811 regulations. Follow up on customer complaints, such as, backups, odor issues, etc. Respond to all emergencies and discuss the details with the Plant Superintendent. Keep up with the changing laws and requirements regarding the testing of wastewater quality samples. Pay:
$24.00 - $30.00 per hour
