Essential duties and responsibilities Plant operations: Monitor, operate, and adjust plant machinery and systems, including pumps, motors, filters, and chemical feeders, to control the flow and treatment of water.

Water quality testing:

Collect water samples and perform a variety of laboratory tests to measure parameters such as pH, chlorine levels, and turbidity. Analyze the results to determine the appropriate treatment steps.

Process control:

Use a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and other instruments to monitor the treatment process and make necessary adjustments to chemical feeds and flow rates.

Maintenance and repair:

Conduct routine inspections, maintenance, and minor repairs on plant equipment and facilities. Identify and report more complex issues to a supervisor or the maintenance department.

Record-keeping and reporting:

Maintain detailed and accurate logs of plant operations, test results, chemical usage, and maintenance activities. Submit reports to regulatory agencies as required.

Emergency response:

Respond to alarms, power outages, and other emergency situations to minimize service disruption and prevent public health risks.

Chemical handling:

Handle, store, and apply chemicals used in the treatment process, following all safety protocols.

Grounds and facility upkeep:

Perform general cleaning and maintenance duties to keep the plant and grounds in good condition.

Monitor Systems:

Watch computer controls, meters, and gauges to check water flow.

Test Water:

Take samples and run lab tests to measure pollution levels.

Add Chemicals:

Mix and put chemicals like chlorine into the water to kill bad germs.

Fix Equipment:

Clean, grease, and repair pumps, tanks, and valves.

Keep Records:

Write down numbers and send reports to government agencies

Additional Duties:

Assisting other departments with mowing, plowing, or equipment operations. Required qualifications and skills Operator's license: A valid state-issued water treatment or wastewater treatment plant operator's license or certification is preferred. In Indiana, certification is issued by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM). If only certified in one area, future dual certification is preferred.

Education:

A high school diploma or GED is typically required. Some employers may prefer candidates with an associate's degree or technical courses in a related field, such as environmental science or chemistry.

Experience:

Previous experience in a water utility, or with maintenance and mechanical repairs, is often beneficial.

Technical aptitude:

The ability to understand and operate complex mechanical and electrical equipment is essential. Computer skills for using SCADA and other software are also necessary.

Problem-solving:

Strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills are needed to diagnose operational issues and determine effective solutions.

Attention to detail:

Operators must carefully monitor gauges and test results to ensure compliance with strict water quality standards.

Math skills:

The ability to perform mathematical calculations for chemical dosing and water flow is necessary.

Communication:

Effective written and verbal communication is important for record-keeping, reports, and collaborating with team members. Working conditions

Schedule:

Plant operators work full-time, and on an on-call basis, as plants operate 24/7.

Environment:

The role involves working both indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. Operators may be exposed to loud machinery, hazardous chemicals, unpleasant odors, and confined spaces.

Physical demands:

The work can be physically demanding, requiring the ability to stand, walk, climb, and lift heavy objects. Safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) are necessary to mitigate risks.
