The City of Abilene Public Works Department is accepting applications for a full-time Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, 40 hours a week, with the potential for intermittent overtime. This position is responsible for performing semi-skilled and unskilled labor in the maintenance and operation of the wastewater treatment plant. Under the supervision of the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent, the Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I is a non-exempt position under the FLSA that performs skilled and semi-skilled labor in the maintenance and operation of the wastewater treatment plant. This employee should possess strong written and oral communication skills, as well as the ability and willingness to learn.Essential Job Functions:
Records and maintains accurate daily plant logs, performs lab tests and reports, and assists with providing information for all other reports; Attend training and technical workshops to acquire operator certification; Responds to plant emergency calls and conducts weekend plant duties; Learn, understand, and follow all safety procedures; Provide building and grounds maintenance, security, and general cleaning of all facilities.Ancillary Job Functions:
Assist with other divisions of Public Works as needed; Assist with other departments when needed; Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required;Education and Experience:
Previous experience is not required, but related experience is preferred. Employees are expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well within six months of employment. A high school diploma or GED is preferred, and a valid Kansas Driver's License is required. This employee is expected to obtain Class I Wastewater certification within 18 months of employment and must be willing to attend required classes and workshops. Must acquire a Kansas Commercial Class A Driver's License within 18 months of hire.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
(Not all inclusive) General knowledge of equipment maintenance is preferred. The ability to learn to operate a tractor, skid steer loader, pumps, mowers, and related equipment is required. This employee should have knowledge of first aid procedures. Problem-solving is involved in this position. This employee encounters equipment malfunctions, performs repairs, and reports serious problems to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent. Limited decision-making is involved in this position. Tasks are routine and performed independently.Work Environment:
Adverse working conditions are present in this position. This employee will have exposure to hazardous chemicals and bloodborne pathogens. This position will require duties to be performed in all types of weather conditions.Physical Abilities:
