Job Description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Performs responsible skilled work operating a refuse collection vehicle in the collection of solid waste; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class operates a waste collection vehicle such as a rear packer, automated, and roll-off truck for the collection and disposal of solid waste.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Operate a refuse truck to follow a predetermined residential/commercial waste collection route safely and efficiently. Transport collected waste to the appropriate dump site. Operate a city vehicle or large waste truck to collect appliances, furniture, roadside trash, etc. Maintain a clean vehicle daily as assigned and perform minor preventative maintenance on assigned equipment Performs related tasks as required Performs additional duties essential to the Public Works Department and/or City needs, as needed and deemed necessary by management.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge and skill in the safe operation of heavy vehicles. Knowledge of waste collection process is preferred. Ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and mechanical equipment. Ability to accurately follow oral and written instructions. Ability to perform difficult manual labor for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable weather conditions. Ability to use department related equipment and materials safely with training.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education and experience operating heavy vehicles.
SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides direct supervision to laborer position, as assigned, in day-to-day refuse collection.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is generally performed in outside environmental conditions in which the employee is subject to workplace hazards including exposure to operating mechanical equipment and atmospheric conditions with extreme cold and heat for extended periods of time. Employee is subject to a level of noise requiring hearing protection and workers to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. In addition, the employee is subject to a chance of injury from basic job requirements.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to perform the basic life operational skills of climbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform occasional heavy work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Legally eligible to work in the United States. Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B Driver's License.
