The Utilities Technician plays a critical role in ensuring safe drinking water delivery, reliable wastewater collection, and the ongoing maintenance of municipal infrastructure. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist in the repair, operation, installation, construction, maintenance, and servicing of water mains, services, valves, hydrants, and related appurtenances Perform restoration of disturbed areas, including asphalt patching, concrete sidewalk repairs, and restoration of vegetated areas Locate water and sewer lines, leaks, valves, and services Perform water service taps Inspect work performed by private contractors, including testing new and replaced components Collect water distribution system samples and perform required compliance and operational testing Participate in maintenance of the sewer collection system, including flushing lines, removing roots, adjusting and maintaining manhole covers, and inspecting infrastructure Assist with construction, installation, and repair of sewer lines and manholes Respond to customer concerns and identify and resolve system issues Perform traffic control and maintain safety and warning signage at work sites Operate excavation and utility equipment Participate in after-hours emergency call-ins for water main breaks and sewer system backups Read, repair, and replace water meters Perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment Install, maintain, and repair fire hydrants and ensure year-round access Mow and trim grass along the water and sewer rights-of-way Perform sidewalk winter maintenance, including after-hours storm response Perform related duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of water treatment and distribution system operations Knowledge of water treatment techniques, instrumentation, laboratory procedures, and sampling Knowledge of sewer system construction, maintenance, and repair methods Knowledge of underground utility excavation procedures and confined space safety Knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations, Town ordinances, and departmental policies Proficiency with computers and job-related software Skill in operating tools, vehicles, and heavy equipment Skill in vehicle and equipment maintenance Skill in locating underground utilities Strong problem-solving, planning, and prioritization skills Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills Ability to work safely in high-traffic, stressful, and hazardous environments Physical Demands and Work Environment Work involves standing, walking, bending, crouching, stooping, and climbing Frequent lifting of light to heavy objects and use of tools requiring dexterity Ability to distinguish colors and utilize sensory awareness (sight, smell, etc.) Work performed outdoors and occasionally at the treatment facilities, including cold or inclement weather Exposure to moving machinery, dust, dirt, grease, irritating chemicals, and raw sewage Use of personal protective equipment such as gloves, goggles, and masks required Minimum Qualifications Minimum High School Diploma; Specialized training related to utilities, water, or sewer systems preferred but will train the right candidate One to two years of relevant experience or equivalent apprenticeship/internship experience preferred Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, a valid New Hampshire Class A CDL with tank endorsement; in-house certification available to obtain necessary licensing. Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, appropriate state certification for water treatment or distribution Possession of, or ability to readily obtain, a Grade 1
NHDES Collection System Operator Certification Hours of Work:
