SUMMARY OF POSITION
: Operates various types of heavy-duty equipment and performs diversified work of the Water/Wastewater Maintenance operations to include repairs, installation of sewer mains, water mains, service lines, and lift station maintenance.
EXAMPLES OF WORK
: Essential Duties
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a backhoe, or light or heavy trucks as required and instructed Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system and performs other routine inspections to ensure vehicle is in proper working condition; Provides assistance with and suggestions for increased safety during assigned projects; Loads, transports, and unloads necessary materials for assigned projects; Performs maintenance and installation of all equipment and materials associated with the Water/Wastewater maintenance and collection system; Operates all vehicles and equipment associated with the Water/Wastewater Maintenance department; Performs the duties of on call as required; Attends in-house and out of house Water/Wastewater Maintenance education and training sessions; Assist the crews in the installation of water and sewer taps; Observes all safety rules and procedures; and Other Important Duties• May perform Crew Leader duties in the absence of the Crew Leader; May build and install forms and pour concrete; and Performs such other duties as may be assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
:
Demonstrated Knowledge of:
Water/Wastewater Maintenance Operations and the maintenance and safe operation of the equipment used in the performance of Water/Wastewater Maintenance duties.
Demonstrated Ability to:
lift and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 92 lbs. (i.e. meters, meter lids, pipe valves, etc.); must be able to enter and exit a 24 inch diameter manhole opening without difficulty; must be able to enter and exit a 24 inch wide ditch, maneuvering freely while operating necessary equipment; perform strenuous work in the outdoors under adverse weather conditions; and safely operate all equipment required under the following circumstances the operator may encounter while operating heavy equipment: Vibration s, Sudden Movements, Lateral Shifts, Impact from Loads, Uneven Ground, Hydraulic Responses (The quick engagement and release of hydraulic functions can create noticeable jerks, particularly when operating attachments like a thumb or grapple), and Operator Fatigue .
Demonstrated Mental Ability to:
tolerate working in confined places for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to:
understand and follow oral and some written instructions; work effectively and cooperatively with other employees and the general public; maintain appropriate necessary certifications; maintain Texas driver's license (applicable to job responsibilities) and good driving record; and must be able to lawfully report for emergency duty from residence within 20 minutes.
Other:
may handle toxic and/or hazardous materials for work in areas where such materials may be stored.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
High school graduation, or its equivalent, and three years' experience operating heavy equipment;
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED
High School diploma/GED, Level II Collections from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and State of Texas Class B (commercial) driver's license with air brakes. For full job description click on the attachment
