Job Description
TIG Welder - 1st Shift - El Cajon Job Description This role focuses on performing high-quality TIG and MIG welding on a variety of assemblies, supporting a journeyman welder with fit-up and fabrication work, and contributing to the accurate and efficient completion of fabrication projects. You will work from blueprints, use fixtures, operate hand tools such as grinders, and document your work to ensure traceability and quality compliance. Responsibilities Perform TIG and MIG welding on a wide range of assemblies in accordance with drawings and specifications. Assist a journeyman welder with fit-up and fabrication tasks, ensuring proper alignment and preparation of parts prior to welding. Read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols to determine weld locations, techniques, and sequence. Use fixtures and jigs to position and secure workpieces during welding and fabrication. Operate hand grinders and other basic fabrication tools to clean, prep, and finish welds and components. Weld exotic materials, including various alloys, Inconel, and 300/400 series stainless steel, following established procedures. Perform welds on different material thicknesses such as .032, .060, .090, and .188 inches, adjusting technique as needed. Set up welding machines, including selecting appropriate amperage, settings, and parameters for each job. Apply back-gouging or back-gap welding techniques when required by the job specifications. Fabricate parts under supervision, ensuring dimensional accuracy and adherence to drawings. Document work performed, including type of rod or filler used, type of weld, and other relevant process details. Identify materials correctly and record them on travelers or job documentation to maintain accurate traceability. Work on assigned jobs both inside and outside the core welding field as needed to support production and project goals. Essential Skills Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding processes on assemblies. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings. Hands-on experience using fixtures and jigs to support accurate fit-up and welding. Capability to weld exotic materials, including alloys, Inconel, and 300/400 series stainless steel. Skill in welding a range of material thicknesses such as .032, .060, .090, and .188 inches. Experience setting up welding machines, including adjusting amperage and other parameters. Competence operating hand grinders and basic fabrication tools safely and effectively. Ability to fabricate parts under supervision while following detailed instructions. Attention to detail in documenting welding work, including filler material, weld type, and process notes. Skill in identifying materials and recording them accurately on travelers or job paperwork. Willingness to work on assigned jobs both within and outside the primary welding responsibilities. Additional Skills & Qualifications Ownership of a personal welding hood suitable for TIG and MIG operations. Familiarity with back-gap welding techniques and their application in production work. Comfort working with exotic alloys and stainless steels in a fabrication environment. Strong organizational skills to maintain clear, accurate records of work performed. Ability to follow direction from a journeyman welder and collaborate effectively with the fabrication team. Why Work Here? Work Environment This is an on-site role based in El Cajon, CA, with work performed on the shop floor four days per week. You will work in a fabrication and welding environment using TIG and MIG welding machines, fixtures, hand grinders, and related shop equipment. The setting involves working around metals, welding arcs, grinding operations, and standard fabrication tools, requiring appropriate personal protective equipment such as a welding hood and safety gear. Work includes handling various material thicknesses and exotic alloys, and may involve moving between different stations or tasks depending on project needs. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of El Cajon, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $40.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
