Job Title:
Welder Fitter Job Description The Welder Fitter performs TIG and MIG welding on a variety of assemblies, supports a journeyman welder with fit-up and fabrication, and works from blueprints to produce high-quality welded components. This role operates in a hands-on fabrication environment, using fixtures and hand tools to weld and assemble parts made from exotic materials and various thicknesses. The position is based on-site in El Cajon, CA, four days per week. Open Shifts First shift schedule 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Mon-Thurs) Second shift schedule 4:00 PM to 2:30 AM(Mon-Thurs) Weekend schedule , 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM(Fri-Sun) Responsibilities Perform TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding on a wide range of assemblies according to specifications and drawings. Assist a journeyman welder with fit-up and fabrication tasks, ensuring components align and meet required tolerances. Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings to plan and execute welds accurately. Use fixtures and jigs to position and secure parts prior to welding to maintain dimensional accuracy. Operate hand grinders and related tools to prepare, clean, and finish welded joints and assemblies. Weld exotic materials, including various alloys, Inconel, and 300/400 series stainless steel, following appropriate procedures. Weld different material thicknesses, including approximately .032, .060, .090, and .188, while maintaining weld quality and consistency. Set up welding machines, including selecting appropriate amperage and parameters based on material, thickness, and weld requirements. Apply welds using back gaps and other techniques as required by the drawing or weld procedure. Fabricate parts under supervision, following instructions and drawings to produce accurate components. Document work performed, including type of rod or wire used, type of weld, and other relevant process details. Identify materials correctly and record them on travelers or job documentation for traceability. Work on assigned jobs both within and adjacent to the welding field, supporting related fabrication tasks as needed. Follow all shop safety practices, maintaining a clean and organized work area. All applicants must be able to provide their own weld gloves and hood to be considered. All other PPE provided. Essential Skills Proficiency in TIG (GTAW) welding on assemblies. Proficiency in MIG (GMAW) welding on assemblies. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawings. Hands-on experience with welding assembly and fixture usage. Ability to use hand grinders and related tools safely and effectively. Competence in documenting welding work, including consumables used and weld types. Willingness to work on assigned jobs both inside and outside the core welding field. Ability to fabricate parts under supervision while following instructions and drawings. Ownership of a personal welding hood suitable for daily use. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience supporting or working alongside a journeyman welder in a fabrication environment. Familiarity with welding using back gaps and other specialized welding techniques. Comfort working with various fixtures and jigs for precise fit-up and alignment. Strong attention to detail and quality in all welding and fabrication tasks. Reliable, safety-conscious work habits in a shop environment. Why Work Here? Work Environment This role is based on-site in El Cajon, CA, four days per week in a fabrication and welding shop environment. We have multiple openings across multiple shifts, as follows; First shift schedule 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Mon-Thurs) Second shift schedule 4:00 PM to 2:30 AM(Mon-Thurs) Weekend schedule , 5:00 AM to 5:30 PM(Fri-Sun) The environment involves the regular use of TIG and MIG welding equipment, welding machines, fixtures, and hand grinders, as well as handling exotic materials such as alloys, Inconel, and 300/400 series stainless steel in various thicknesses. You work around typical shop noise, tools, and equipment, following standard safety practices and using appropriate personal protective equipment, including your own welding hood. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of El Cajon, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
