Welds metal components together with a variety of arc and gas welding equipment to fabricate or repair products. Lays out, fits, and welds fabricated, structural forms such as frames, building and bridge parts by performing the following duties. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Welds metal parts together using both gas welding and any combination of arc welding processes.
- Performs related tasks such as thermal cutting and grinding.
- Repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes, and increases size of metal parts.
- Positions and clamps together components of fabricated metal products preparatory to welding.
- Positions and clamps electrode under overlapping edges of workpiece.
- Presses electrode against workpiece at specified weld points to complete circuit between electrodes and heat metal to joining temperature.
- Removes electrode after specified period of time.
- Adjusts equipment for automatic timing of current.
- Attends group meetings periodically to learn new or modified tasks.
- Positions and clamps workpieces together.
- Selects equipment and plans layout, assembly, and welding.
- Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together.
- Bolts, clamps, and tack-welds parts to secure in position for welding.
- Sets up equipment and welds parts, using arc, gas-shielded arc, submerged arc, or gas welding equipment.
- Welds together metal components of products such as pipelines, automobiles, boilers, ships, aircraft, and mobile homes with electric arc-welding equipment by performing the following duties.
- Obtains specified electrode and inserts electrode into portable holder or threads consumable electrode wire through portable welding gun.
- Connects cables from welding unit to obtain amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse, as specified by Welding Engineer or Welding Technician.
- Starts Power Supply to produce electric current.
- Strikes (forms) arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and join edges of workpiece.
- Manually guides electrode or gun along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and bead, as judged from color of metal, sound of weld, and size of molten puddle.
- Welds in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
- Examines weld for bead size and other specifications.
- Applies filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
- Cleans or degreases weld joint or workpiece.
- Repairs broken or cracked parts and fills holes.
- Prepares broken parts for welding by grooving or scarfing surfaces.
- Chips off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
- Preheats workpiece with hand torch.
- Positions and clamps workpieces together or assembles them in jig or fixture.
- Tacks assemblies together.

Education and/or Experience
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Language Skills
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Reasoning Ability
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Job Description:
The Shop Helper will assist with day-to-day operations in a steel fabrication shop, supporting welders, fabricators, and shop staff with basic tasks. Duties include material handling, prepping parts, operating basic hand and power tools, cleaning and organizing work areas, and maintaining shop safety standards. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals interested in learning fabrication processes and gaining experience in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist with moving, staging, and organizing raw materials and finished products.
- Use basic shop tools such as grinders, drills, saws, and measuring devices under supervision.
- Prep materials for fabrication, including deburring, cleaning, and marking parts.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment by sweeping, disposing of scrap, and restocking supplies.
- Support shop personnel with general labor tasks as assigned.
- Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
Minimum Requirements:
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physical labor in an industrial environment.
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions from experienced shop staff.
- Basic understanding of hand tools preferred but not required.
- Must be reliable, punctual, and able to work in a team setting.
Work Environment:
