Job Title:
Welder Job Description This role involves performing MIG, Flux Core, and STICK welding on heavy gauge steel components, typically 1 inch thick and above, in a high-volume steel fabrication environment. You will set up and operate welding equipment, complete quality welds within specified time frames, and contribute to the fabrication of large steel products by reading blueprints, performing simple layouts, and using a variety of tools to ensure accurate and structurally sound welds. Responsibilities Perform MIG, Flux Core, and STICK welding on heavy gauge steel, including material that is 1 inch thick and above. Set up and operate welding machines and related equipment to meet production and quality requirements. Complete welds within defined time frames while maintaining high quality and adherence to specifications. Carry out simple fabrication tasks and perform basic layouts based on blueprints and work instructions. Read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols to determine weld locations, dimensions, and techniques. Weld in flat, horizontal, and vertical positions as required by the job. Utilize hand tools and measuring devices, including micrometers and calipers, to verify dimensions and tolerances. Use torches, air arcs, hand grinders, fixtures, and tooling aids to correct imperfections and finish welds. Grind and clean welds as needed to meet quality and appearance standards. Work on large piece products and handle large steel components safely and efficiently. Maintain a clean and organized work area to support safety and productivity. Lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds as part of daily tasks. Follow all safety procedures, including the use of steel-toe footwear and appropriate welding gear. Collaborate with team members and shift personnel to meet production schedules and project deadlines. Essential Skills At least 2 years of MIG welding experience in a production or fabrication environment. Proficiency in MIG welding on heavy gauge steel, including 1 inch thick material. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and weld symbols accurately. Ability to weld in multiple positions, including flat, horizontal, and vertical. Experience with simple fabrication and fitting of steel components. Skill in using hand tools and measuring devices such as micrometers and calipers. Capability to perform grinding and finishing work on welded parts. Ability to use torches, air arcs, fixtures, and tooling aids to correct weld imperfections. Comfort and experience working with large piece steel products. Physical ability to lift up to 60 pounds and work on your feet throughout the shift. Willingness to work either 1st or 2nd shift, with flexibility to start on 2nd shift as needed. Reliability in meeting production timelines and completing welds within specified time frames. Additional Skills & Qualifications MIG and STICK welding experience beyond the core MIG requirement. Previous experience in a large production steel fabrication shop. Familiarity with working around CNC machines and multiple weld booths. Experience supplying weld and fabrication work for large industrial or transportation equipment manufacturers. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in a large production steel fabrication shop equipped with several CNC machines and multiple weld booths dedicated to large steel equipment. The facility operates multiple shifts, with 2nd shift typically running from 3:30 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., and occasionally extended to 2:00 a.m. depending on workload. New hires may train on 1st shift for approximately one week before transitioning to their regular schedule. The environment reflects typical steel fabrication conditions: it can become hot in the summer and cold in the winter, and you will work around heavy steel components, welding equipment, and grinding operations. Steel-toe footwear is required at all times, and appropriate welding gear is also required to ensure safety. The shop supports long-term, large-scale projects for major industrial and transportation customers, providing a busy, production-focused setting with a strong emphasis on safety, quality, and teamwork. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Harvey, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.
