Job Description
ob DescriptionFit and weld Fit-and-weld is a core process in metal fabrication, especially in shops that build structural steel, frames, tanks, conveyors, and custom assemblies. It's the stage where raw or pre-cut metal parts are aligned, clamped, and prepared so a welder can permanently join them. Fitting (the setup stage)This is where a fitter takes individual metal components and makes sure they're positioned exactly where they need to be before welding.
A fitter will:
Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and fabrication drawingsMeasure and mark steel using tape measures, squares, levels, and layout toolsAlign parts using clamps, jigs, fixtures, wedges, and magnetsPrep edges (grinding, beveling) so welds penetrate correctlyCheck tolerances to ensure the assembly meets specThink of the fitter as the person who "builds the puzzle" before it's permanently fused.2. Welding (the joining stage)Once the parts are aligned, the welder joins them using processes like:
MIG (GMAW)
