Job Title:
Welder and Fitter Job Description This role involves welding and fitting heavy structural steel components for building and construction projects using flux core and MIG processes. You will interpret blueprints, use quality tools, and collaborate closely with experienced welders, fitters, and architects to produce high-quality structural assemblies. The position offers hands-on training with team members and focuses on delivering precise, durable welds in a clean, well-organized facility. Responsibilities Weld heavy structural steel components for buildings and construction projects using flux core .045 and MIG welding processes. Interpret and work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications to complete welding and fitting tasks accurately. Fit and assemble structural steel components prior to welding, ensuring correct alignment, dimensions, and tolerances. Use quality tools and measuring instruments to verify welds and assemblies meet required standards. Collaborate closely with architects to understand design requirements and incorporate their feedback into the final product. Work alongside and learn from highly experienced welders and fitters to refine techniques and maintain consistent quality. Perform fabrication tasks such as cutting, prepping, and assembling steel components as needed. Handle heavy steel materials safely, following established safety procedures and best practices. Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring tools and equipment are properly stored and maintained. Follow all safety guidelines, including proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to facility safety protocols. Essential Skills 3+ years of flux core or MIG welding experience. 3+ years of structural steel welding or fabrication experience. Proficiency in flux core welding, including .045 wire. Proficiency in MIG welding for structural components. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Experience working with structural steel in a fabrication or construction environment. Strong fitting skills for aligning and assembling steel components. Ability to use quality tools and measuring instruments to verify dimensions and tolerances. Capability to perform heavy steel welding in a safe and controlled manner. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with TIG welding. Experience working with stainless steel materials. BG in metal fabrication and fitting beyond structural work. Previous experience in small to mid-sized steel fabrication shops. Ability to collaborate effectively with architects, engineers, and other stakeholders. Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality welds and assemblies. Why Work Here? Work Environment The role is based in a smaller, clean structural steel fabrication facility focused on heavy steel welding and fitting. The shop operates multiple shifts, with a first shift from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and a second shift from 2:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. You will work with flux core and MIG welding equipment, quality tools, and structural steel handling equipment in a well-maintained, organized environment. The facility emphasizes safety, cleanliness, and efficient workflow while supporting collaboration between welders, fitters, and architect Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Menomonee Falls, WI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $30.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
