Part-Time / Full-Time (Based on Program Needs)

Program Manager / Program Director Position Summary Urban Community Action Network (UCAN) is seeking motivated, community-oriented individuals to serve as CALVIP Community Ambassadors. Community Ambassadors are trusted community residents trained in violence prevention, conflict resolution, mediation, trauma-informed engagement, and community outreach. The Community Ambassador plays a vital role in promoting public safety and reducing violence throughout South Los Angeles, Skid Row, and Downtown Los Angeles. Ambassadors provide safe passage support around schools, parks, and community gathering areas while helping mediate conflicts and reduce tensions following violent incidents or shootings. Community Ambassadors work directly with youth, families, unhoused individuals, justice-involved populations, and residents impacted by violence, trauma, substance use disorders, and mental health challenges. The position requires strong communication skills, professionalism, cultural sensitivity, and a commitment to community healing and violence prevention. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Violence Prevention & Community Outreach Conduct community outreach throughout Skid Row, Downtown Los Angeles, and surrounding areas Promote violence prevention and community safety initiatives Build positive relationships with youth, residents, local businesses, schools, and community stakeholders Participate in violence interruption and de-escalation efforts Assist in reducing community tensions following shootings or violent incidents Conduct outreach to high-risk and underserved populations Safe Passage Support Provide safe passage monitoring around schools, parks, bus stops, and community areas Help maintain visible, positive community presence during high-risk hours Assist with youth safety and violence prevention activities Conflict Resolution & Mediation Utilize mediation and conflict resolution techniques to reduce violence Help intervene in disputes before situations escalate Support healing-centered and trauma-informed engagement practices Community Education & Engagement Provide public education regarding violence prevention, trauma awareness, substance use resources, and mental health support Participate in community meetings, outreach events, workshops, and prevention activities Distribute educational materials and community resources Case Support & Referrals Connect individuals and families to supportive services including: Housing assistance Employment readiness Mental health services Substance use treatment Case management services Crisis intervention support Documentation & Reporting Complete outreach logs, activity reports, and incident documentation Maintain accurate records required for BSCC CalVIP reporting compliance Attend required staff meetings and trainings Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED preferred Experience working in community outreach, violence prevention, mentoring, social services, or related field preferred Strong knowledge of South Los Angeles and surrounding communities preferred Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations Ability to remain calm and professional in stressful situations Commitment to community empowerment and violence prevention Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends when necessary Desired Skills Conflict resolution and mediation skills Trauma-informed care understanding Leadership and teamwork abilities Strong interpersonal communication Community engagement experience Cultural sensitivity and professionalism Crisis intervention awareness Physical Requirements Ability to walk and stand for extended periods during outreach activities Ability to work outdoors in various community settings Ability to travel throughout service areas as needed Work Environment This position primarily operates in community-based settings throughout South Los Angeles, Skid Row, and Downtown Los Angeles. Ambassadors regularly engage in street outreach, school and park safety support, community events, and violence prevention activities.
