Full Job Description Job Title:
Director of Communications Overview The Director of Communications supports our mission of connecting all people to Jesus Christ. by ensuring that the church's communications are clear, consistent, welcoming, and of high quality. While not responsible for setting ministry strategy, the role shapes how that vision is communicated to the congregation and wider community. The role requires a skilled storyteller who can communicate the mission and vision of our church in creative and compelling ways that strengthen our existing ministries and invite engagement from new audiences. The Director collaborates closely with staff and congregants, manages projects independently, and maintains excellent attention to detail. Values The Director of Communications must be comfortable working in a progressive United Methodist context and communicating with warmth, clarity, and theological sensitivity. The Director will oversee the church's communications to ensure printed and digital materials are welcoming, inclusive, and aligned with the mission, values, and visual identity of Missouri UMC. Supervision The Director of Communications reports to the Associate Pastor and works closely with pastoral staff, ministry leaders, and congregants. Role Focus This position is designed for someone who excels at execution and quality control, someone who can reliably produce excellent work, uphold standards, and collaborate effectively within a shared vision.
Primary Expectations:
Communications Production & Distribution Oversee and produce recurring communications, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and visual consistency, including:
  • Weekly worship bulletins (including special services)
  • Visuals for worship screens (slides, liturgy, background images)
  • Weekly electronic newsletter Prepare and oversee the production of printed materials as needed, including but not limited to:
  • Annual reports
  • Stewardship and generosity materials
  • Ministry brochures and promotional pieces Digital Communications Oversee and maintain the church website, ensuring content is current, accurate, and aligned with ministry priorities Design high‑quality graphics for digital platforms that adhere to established brand standards Utilize social media platforms to communicate ministry information and share the life of the church, in collaboration with the Associate Pastor Content Capture & Storytelling Attend ministry events for the purpose of capturing photos, videos, and other content that reflect the life and mission of the church Be present on Sundays at least three times monthly and at key ministry events (including Easter, Christmas Eve, and other major events), as determined in collaboration with the supervisor Brand Standards & Quality Control Maintain and enforce communications and visual identity standards across all printed and digital materials Develop a system for communication requests and distribution of graphics Review, prioritize, and sequence communications requests to ensure consistency, quality, and feasibility Provide guidance and feedback to staff and congregants to ensure materials align with established standards Exercise professional judgment to revise, redirect, or decline work that does not meet quality or brand expectations Collaborative Responsibilities Partner with ministry leaders to translate ministry goals into effective communications Support marketing and outreach efforts as a collaborative partner, recognizing that overall marketing strategy is led by the Associate Pastor Serve as a communications resource and subject‑matter expert for staff and congregants involved in communications‑related work Partner with staff or congregants for media-related ministries, including but not limited to: devotional recordings, videos to promote specific ministries, and instructional videos.
Standards & Expectations All communications produced by Missouri United Methodist Church should be:
  • Accurate and free of errors
  • Clear, welcoming, and theologically appropriate
  • Consistent with the church's mission, values, and visual identity The Director of Communications is expected to demonstrate strong attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining high standards.
Required Skills Excellent graphic design skills, including experience with video and digital media Strong written communication and proofreading skills Ability to synthesize information from multiple sources into clear communications Familiarity with social media platforms and their use in organizational communication Ability to work collaboratively while exercising independent judgment Proficiency in, or ability to learn, tools such as ProPresenter and Planning Center Desired Skills Photography and videography Web design and content management Marketing or communications campaign experience Qualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience Minimum of 3 years of communications or related experience, with demonstrated competence in the areas listed above A portfolio of work is required for consideration, showcasing relevant skills (e.g., graphic design, digital media, video, social media, or print communications) Two professional references Hours and Employment Status This is a non-exempt, full‑time position subject to the personnel policies of the church for non‑clergy employees. Some evening and weekend work is required. Any offer of employment is contingent upon successful Safe Gatherings certification, as required by Missouri United Methodist Church's Safe Gatherings policies.
