Job Description

The North Carolina Conference is seeking a Director of Communications to lead the development and execution of a comprehensive communication strategy that supports the mission and ministries of the Conference. This role works collaboratively with the Bishop, Cabinet, and Conference leadership to ensure clear, consistent, and mission-aligned messaging across the connection. The Director oversees communication platforms, media relations, branding, and storytelling initiatives, while strengthening communication among Conference agencies, districts, and local churches. The position also leads crisis communications planning, supports Annual Conference and major events, and equips leaders with tools and training for effective communication. The ideal candidate brings strong strategic communication skills, experience managing digital and media platforms, and the ability to translate complex information into clear and engaging messaging for a diverse, mission-driven organization. This is a full-time, exempt position with a regular in-office presence required (minimum three days per week). Job Description GENERAL The Director of Communications reports to the Executive Director of Connectional Ministries and provides leadership for the development, coordination, and execution of the Conference's communication strategy. This role works collaboratively with the Bishop, Cabinet, Connectional Table, and Conference leadership to ensure clear, consistent, and mission-aligned communication across the Conference. This position combines strategic leadership with hands-on implementation, overseeing communication platforms, messaging, media relations, and branding to support the ministries and operations of the North Carolina Annual Conference.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES I.
Communications Strategy and Leadership Develop and implement a comprehensive communication strategy for the Conference Collaborate with the Bishop, Cabinet, and Conference leadership to align messaging with mission and priorities Guide communication planning for Conference-wide initiatives and ministries Ensure consistent branding, voice, and messaging across all platforms II. Conference and Connectional Communications Strengthen communication among Conference agencies, districts, and local churches Provide strategic guidance to Conference leaders on effective communication practices Interpret and communicate Conference priorities, including budget and benevolences Serve as liaison with United Methodist Communications III. Media and Public Relations Develop and maintain relationships with media outlets across the Conference Serve as primary contact for media engagement and public messaging Promote the mission, ministry, and reputation of the Conference Coordinate public messaging and storytelling initiatives IV. Crisis Communications Develop and maintain a Conference-wide crisis communication plan Coordinate crisis response messaging in collaboration with Conference leadership Train staff and key leaders on crisis communication protocols Ensure timely, accurate, and consistent communication during critical situations V. Communications Systems and Technology Oversee communication platforms, tools, and systems used across the Conference Evaluate and implement emerging communication technologies to support ministry Ensure effective use of digital tools, websites, and communication channels Coordinate with internal and external partners on system improvements VI. Training and Resource Development Provide training and resources for Conference staff, districts, and local churches Equip leaders with tools and best practices for effective communication Conduct communication assessments and offer strategic recommendations Develop user-friendly guides and materials to support communication efforts VII. Annual Conference and Event Communications Lead communication planning and execution for Annual Conference sessions and major events Collaborate with planning teams to ensure effective messaging and engagement Coordinate communication timelines, materials, and on-site support Ensure alignment of event communications with overall Conference strategy VIII. Team Leadership and Committee Support Supervise Communications Office staff and coordinate volunteer engagement Serve as staff representative to the Conference Communications Committee Support Conference teams and initiatives with communication expertise Represent the Conference in various settings, promoting its mission and vision
QUALIFICATIONS
Required Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field Demonstrated experience in strategic communications and messaging Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills Experience managing communication platforms and digital tools Ability to lead projects and collaborate across multiple stakeholders Preferred Knowledge of The United Methodist Church structure and polity Experience in a nonprofit, conference, or connectional organization Experience with media relations and crisis communication Supervisory or team leadership experience
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Full-time exempt position Regular in-office presence required (minimum three days per week) Occasional travel within the Conference is required (up to 25%) Extended travel may be beneficial for denominational networking and learning (up to 5%) Availability to support urgent communication needs outside of normal business hours, if needed Download Job Description PDF→
