  • Full-time First Day is seeking a dynamic and highly skilled Director of Development to lead our community outreach and fundraising efforts across Los Angeles County.
This strategic, relationship-driven leader will build long-term partnerships, cultivate major donors and foundation supporters, and increase awareness and support for First Day's mission across all communities we serve, including SPAs 5 and 7. This position requires an experienced development and communications professional with a strong record in donor cultivation, foundation relations, community engagement, and nonprofit fundraising. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong emotional intelligence, the ability to manage and engage high-level donors, and a proven capacity to pursue and secure foundation giving. The Director of Development will represent First Day at public events, meetings, and community forums; manage annual fundraising campaigns; oversee individual and institutional giving strategies; and work closely with a Development Consultant, site teams, and organizational leadership to ensure fundraising and communications efforts are aligned with programmatic impact and agency priorities. This role requires someone who can work effectively in a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative workplace and build strong relationships across a wide range of communities, stakeholders, and team members. The successful candidate will be a strong communicator, a strategic thinker, and a mission-driven professional who can represent First Day with professionalism, cultural humility, and confidence. NOTE:
First Day considers this position to be a mandated reporter of elder and child abuse. Fundraising Leadership Lead First Day's comprehensive development strategy, including individual giving, foundation giving, donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Develop and implement an annual fundraising plan aligned with organizational goals and revenue targets. Oversee campaigns such as Giving Tuesday, year-end appeals, donor spotlights, site-specific fundraising efforts, and foundation proposals. Collaborate with the Development Consultant, Program Compliance, and leadership to align private fundraising with grant-funded initiatives, organizational priorities, and messaging standards. Donor Cultivation and Stewardship Build and manage a portfolio of major individual donors, foundation partners, and institutional supporters. Conduct donor visits, site tours, and ongoing communications to deepen engagement and retention. Track donor relationships, proposals, and giving history using the agency's CRM system, such as DonorPerfect or a similar platform. Create compelling donor-facing materials, including impact reports, stewardship updates, personalized outreach, and foundation narratives. Community Outreach and Public Engagement Represent First Day at community events, coalition meetings, funder briefings, and public forums across Los Angeles County. Build partnerships with businesses, service clubs, schools, civic organizations, faith communities, and philanthropic institutions to expand awareness and support. Serve as a spokesperson for the organization at events and in media, articulating First Day's mission, impact, and funding needs with clarity and professionalism. Coordinate and support site-specific outreach efforts, ensuring consistent messaging and branding across all locations. Communications Strategy Work with marketing, leadership, and external communications partners to create content for newsletters, social media, donor appeals, foundation updates, and public campaigns. Develop and maintain a calendar of community events, outreach opportunities, donor deadlines, and storytelling moments across First Day sites. Support the creation of donor materials, brochures, one-pagers, presentations, and grant-related collateral tailored to different audiences. Team Collaboration and Leadership Collaborate with program leaders at all First Day sites to identify compelling stories, data, and outcomes for donor and foundation engagement. Partner closely with the Development Consultant to coordinate fundraising strategy, foundation prospecting, campaign planning, and external messaging. Mentor junior development or communications staff, if applicable, and support cross-department collaboration for events, donor engagement, and volunteer initiatives. Participate in management meetings to represent development priorities and contribute to organization-wide planning. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Communications, Nonprofit Management, Public Relations, or a related field; Master's degree preferred. At least 3-5 years of experience in fund development, communications, or community engagement within a nonprofit setting. Proven ability to cultivate and steward individual donors, high-level donors, and foundation partners, with a track record of meeting fundraising goals. Strong writing, public speaking, and presentation skills. Strong emotional intelligence, professionalism, and the ability to build trust with diverse stakeholders. Ability to work effectively in a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative workplace. Ability to travel independently to locations across Los Angeles County and attend evening or weekend events as needed. Understand government contracts (City, County, State) High emotional intelligence, discretion, and a passion for social impact work. Preferred Skills Experience working with populations affected by homelessness, poverty, or health disparities. Familiarity with donor databases such as DonorPerfect or Salesforce and digital fundraising platforms. Experience working with foundation funders, grantmakers, and institutional partners. Ability to collaborate with consultants, senior leaders, and cross-functional teams in a fast-paced nonprofit environment. Bilingual in English and Spanish.
