Job Description

Title Communications and Community Engagement Coordinator Location City of Griffin Description The individual in this position will serve as the primary operational support position for the City's communications and community engagement efforts, ensuring consistent messaging, effective public information distribution, and meaningful engagement opportunities for residents, businesses, stakeholders, and visitors. This position will support the City's internal and external communications and engagement efforts and assist in advancing citywide strategic initiatives.
Essential duties include:
Serves as the primary content creator for the City's communication platforms, including website content, social media, newsletters, photography, videography, and promotional materials. Develops, writes, edits, and distributes press releases, public notices, media advisories, newsletters, and other public information materials. Maintains and updates the City's website to ensure timely, accurate, accessible, and engaging public information. Manages and monitors the City's social media platforms and develops content strategies to increase public awareness and engagement. Creates graphic design materials and visual communications consistent with City branding standards. Coordinates photography and videography for City projects, events, programs, and initiatives. Assists City departments with communication planning, public information distribution, marketing efforts, and public-facing materials. Coordinates communication and promotional efforts for City events, programs, initiatives, public meetings, infrastructure improvements, and special projects. Administers the Citizens Government Academy and Citizens Government Academy Junior programs, including recruitment, scheduling, logistics, communications, curriculum support, and participant engagement. Assists with the City Ambassador Program and other community engagement initiatives designed to increase citizen participation, awareness, and involvement in City programs, services, and projects. Conducts community outreach activities and represents the City at meetings, events, and public functions as assigned. Assists with internal communication efforts designed to improve employee awareness, engagement, and organizational communication. Maintains communication calendars, content schedules, media lists, photography archives, and communication databases. Monitors communication analytics and prepares reports measuring engagement, reach, and effectiveness. Works collaboratively with the Main Street Program Manager & Downtown Engagement Coordinator to support downtown promotions, events, and public engagement initiatives. Assists during emergency situations by supporting public information and communication efforts as assigned. Executes and embodies the City of Griffin's Mission and Vision while promoting professional, accessible, and responsive communication with citizens and stakeholders. Performs other related duties as assigned. Position Requirements Finger dexterity and needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator, and to operate standard office equipment. The work is typically performed in an office setting while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light objects. Knowledge of communications, public relations, marketing, digital media, and community engagement principles. Knowledge of website content management systems and social media platforms. Knowledge of photography, videography, graphic design, and digital content creation. Knowledge of citizen engagement principles and public participation strategies. Knowledge of local government communications practices preferred. Must have good judgement and the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of situations while remaining helpful and pleasant at all times. Must have a professional appearance, positive demeanor, and treat others with dignity and respect, responding promptly to their needs. Must have clear and effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interpret such information. Must be able to speak with confidence, clarity, and poise. Must demonstrate a strong sense of initiative and be able to prioritize and perform work independently. Must have the ability to multitask multiple projects or issues simultaneously and meet firm deadlines, prioritizing as necessary. Must be proficient in typing, data entry, electronic communications, and the use of computers and general computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and email. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, residents, media representatives, community partners, business owners, and the public. Experience with social media management, website management, photography, videography, graphic design, and content creation. Experience working with local government, public sector organizations, nonprofit organizations, or community-based programs. Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Public Administration, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience sufficient to successfully perform the work of the position. Two (2) to four (4) years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, community engagement, journalism, or a related field preferred. Possession of a valid State of Georgia driver's license, acceptable driving history, and the ability to drive a vehicle as needed. •This position will represent the City at a variety of events that will include work outside of normal business hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
