Communications Specialist

REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from high school or GED. Citizen of United States and resident of the State of Iowa or intend to become resident at time of hire, at least 18 years of age. No felony convictions, aggravated misdemeanors or convictions for crimes involving moral turpitude. Free of drug or alcohol addiction. Normal hearing in each ear. Good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation and fingerprint search. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the state of Iowa. Must possess good typing and computer skills, oral and written skills, able to function under stress, able to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, MUST be able to work various shifts, overtime, holidays and weekends.

DUTIES:

Provides communications for emergency services by taking complaints, acquiring information from computer records and other sources, and dispatching the appropriate emergency service. Also coordinates communications between different emergency services. Maintains record by entering arrest, complain and citations into the computer files, maintaining and entering missing person files and court orders, maintain all files necessary for the operations of the Police Department, and submits reports and records to the appropriate agency. Handles routine office procedures by collecting fines and fees, making deposits, and maintaining radio logs, providing information to the public and relaying requests for assistance and service to the appropriate agency. Applies high ethical standards, such as honesty, responsibility and trustworthiness, at all times. Prompt reliable and regular attendance during regular business hours.

EXAMINATION METHOD

Application Process:

Application must be on file by deadline date. 2.

Written Exam:

Applicants passing the Application Process will be subject to a Written Exam. This exam consists of 5 Sections and takes approximately 2 hours. Applicants will need to score and overall score of 80% or higher on this exam to move onto the Interview Process. 3.

Oral Interview:

Applicants passing the Written Exam will be subject to an Oral Interview with a panel of individuals consisting of the Communications Supervisor, Assistant Communications Supervisor and other that the Applicant could work with on a daily basis. Applicants will be notified of a date/time. 4.

Background Investigation:

During the Oral Interview, applicants will sign a "Authority for Release of Information", this will allow the Jefferson County Communications Center to conduct a thorough background investigation including contacting references. Once applicants have passed the background they will be placed on the Communications Specialist eligibility list, which is valid for one year.
