THE MUSEUM
The New Orleans African American Museum is dedicated to preserving the history and elevating the art, culture, and contributions of African Americans in New Orleans and across the African Diaspora. Located in the historic Tremé neighborhood, NOAAM operates as a multi-building campus and cultural hub, producing exhibitions, public programs, and community-centered initiatives that reflect the complexity and richness of Black life. Communications Assistant & Design Coordinator Position Overview The New Orleans African American Museum seeks a highly organized, visually skilled, and creative Communications Assistant & Design Coordinator to support the museum's communications, marketing, exhibitions, and earned income initiatives. This role supports the day-to-day production of visual communications across digital, print, exhibitions, public programs, fundraising campaigns, and institutional branding. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, collaborative, deadline-driven, and passionate about arts, culture, and storytelling. This position is ideal for an early-career communications professional or designer looking to grow within a dynamic cultural institution. Core Responsibilities Graphic Design & Visual Production Create graphics for: social media exhibitions public programs newsletters fundraising campaigns website banners print materials merchandise signage and wayfinding Adapt existing brand templates and maintain visual consistency Resize and format assets for print and web use Social Media & Content Support Assist with social media scheduling and posting Organize photo/video assets Capture and post museum/programming content (photos, Reels, Stories), according to Communications plan Research and identify necessary assets for posts (e.g. historic photos) Draft written content with support Maintain content archives and folders Website & Newsletter Support Assist with website updates Format Mailchimp newsletters Work with Communications Manager to collect, write, and edit newsletter content Upload graphics and promotional materials Exhibition & Program Support Support production of: exhibition labels wall text formatting event flyers promotional materials donor/member graphics Administrative & Production Coordination Coordinate file management and asset organization Assist with communication timelines and deliverables Help track vendor deliverables and media assets Maintain clear communication and organized files to facilitate contributions from team members
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with Canva required Experience with Adobe Creative Suite preferred Strong visual design instincts and attention to detail Comfortable working within templates and brand systems Energetic approach to social media, with experience making videos Organized and deadline-oriented Strong communication skills; writing experience desired Photography, film, or video editing experience valued Interest in Black arts, culture, history, and community-centered work preferred
HOURS & STRUCTURE
Part-Time (20 hours weekly) Some evening/weekend availability preferred around major events Reports to Communications Manager Works closely with Deputy Director and Executive Director
SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Graphics are timely, polished, and consistent Communications assets are organized and easy to access Campaigns launch on time Social media feels active and aligned Exhibitions and events are visually supported Staff have a pre-planned schedule that is executed in advance More strategic content targets new audiences and grows awareness/traffic for the museum
