Job Description:
The communications specialist II is an integral part of the marketing and communications team and independently develops, writes, edits and proofs high-quality web and print content, making sure that all original creative work as well as content created by others is accurate, engaging, grammatically correct and in compliance with brand standards and adopted style guides. Additionally, this role complements digital marketing strategies by independently and collaboratively producing compelling videos and photographs in conjunction with overall branding and marketing strategies.
Responsibilities:
Exercise independent discretion and judgment to write, edit, fact-check and proofread deadline-driven print, web and social media materials to promote Immaculata and its programs and support the University's strategic goals and priorities. Manage, including working with other editorial and creative contributors, the writing and review processes for undergraduate and graduate promotional and informational materials. Collaborate with Academic Affairs, faculty and other subject matter experts to review and update academic program information in program sheets, postcards, brochures, flyers, booklets and other materials. Work with the web and digital experience manager in creating and maintaining website content to provide accurate, concise, keyword-rich, easily searchable information about the University and its programs and highlighting benefits and alumni outcomes and with making web content edits in WordPress, SharePoint or other web design or content management systems. Independently conduct interviews and develop, write and edit original works, including feature stories, news articles, headlines and captions for Immaculata website and magazine. Ensure a consistent, compelling, and grammatically/stylistically correct brand voice, tone and messaging in copy across all communications channels by exercising independent judgment in editing and proofreading original works and works of others in accordance with University and external style guides. Provide editorial and production planning for print and digital publications. Assist with media relations. Build relationships with University departments to identify and pursue story ideas for feature stories, news releases and video productions. Provide writing and editing support for various University departments and functions, including fundraising, institutional advancement, admissions, student life and more. Independently write news releases and news stories. Work closely with cross-functional staff, including graphic designers, web developers, social media specialists, videographers, photographers, admissions staff and academic departments, to coordinate marketing and communications efforts. Solicit and maintain list of student and alumni testimonials. Build proficiency in media and social media monitoring, including Prowly and SEMRUSH tools. Gather media items and distribute the daily IU in the News. Stay informed of best practices in higher education marketing, writing, communications, and use of AI to identify and implement opportunities for innovation. Serve on the crisis communications team. Create social media posts and handle other strategic social media tasks under the direction of the lead digital and social media resource. Independently capture, edit, and/or produce photos and videos under the direction of the lead digital and social media resource. Assistance may include photography, videography, on-camera appearances, photo editing, video editing/production, and related tasks. Manage multiple projects and associated deadlines simultaneously. Support the mascot manager with mascot coverage, including getting the mascot into its costume and escorting the mascot to campus events. This may include some weekend and evening hours. Requirements:
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, or similar discipline. Weekends and evenings may be required for special events. Strong skills in copywriting, editing and proofreading for informative and promotional projects. Creativity, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to independently, effectively and diplomatically communicate with a wide range of individuals, teams and constituencies in diverse communities within and outside the organization. Ability to exercise independent discretion and judgment, take creative direction, work effectively with a team as well as independently, and be proactive in seeking solutions to challenges or opportunities. Experience with writing and communications tools, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, web content management systems (e.g., WordPress, SharePoint), Acrobat and email platforms. Experience with photo and video editing/production tools, such as PhotoShop, Premiere Pro, CapCut, etc. Familiarity with following, implementing and enforcing editorial styles, including a strong working knowledge of AP style. Ability to manage multiple tasks concurrently and effectively prioritize among competing needs. Skill in organizing resources and establishing and adjusting priorities in a dynamic environment. Ability to adapt and willingness to learn new communications and marketing skills.
Preferred Requirements:
Experience managing SharePoint sites/intranets. Experience managing/working in professional social media accounts and ad platforms.
