  • Full-time Position Summary As a Communications Specialist, the ideal candidate will be responsible for internal and external communications that are in line with the organization's needs and requirements.
Work is performed under the supervision and general direction of the Communications Manager. Essential Job Functions Write, prepare, and/or review articles, info graphs, and social media campaigns and postings to be utilized by the County on various platforms Maintain, edit, and oversee deployment of the Style Guide Coordinate, create, and produce the Orange County Insight newsletter Develop and deploy social media strategies for various target markets Develop and deploy public service campaigns Responsible for website content, maintenance, analytics, and associated modules Coordinate with departments to publish notifications related to events and activities Create templates and print media for departments Craft, edit, and issue releases press releases, news flashes, and general notifications Create, maintain, and analyze social media platforms for the County and various departments Confirm information, artwork, and facts in materials submitted by departments Assist departments with research, composition, and design of various types of media and communications Support the creation, production, editing, and publishing of informational and promotional videos Ensure all work follows editorial policies and standards Serve as an alternate media contact for Orange County Present information to County or outside entities as assigned Develop, support, and promote messaging such as social media content creation and outreach, public information materials, and the like Serve as the Assistant Public Information Officer, as directed by the Public Information Officer, Assistant County Administrator, and/or County Administrator. Duties may include creating and approving press releases, media communications, and participating in response drills Occasional support for Emergency Services communications Perform related tasks, as required

Minimum Qualifications Education:
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Marketing, Public Administration, or related field
Experience:
Minimum three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience
Certifications/Licenses:
Valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license
Other:
Other equivalent education and work experience may be considered in meeting the minimum education and experience requirement Special Qualifications Acceptable driving record Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of the mission, goals, and objectives of the organization Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques related to functional areas of general government Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques governing communications Ability to make oral presentations to elected officials, department management, or the public Ability to organize and write detailed reports accurately Ability to use word processing and presentation software to prepare documents, and to use spreadsheet and statistical analysis software to store, manipulate, analyze, and present data Working Conditions and Disclaimer This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting and speaking or hearing, frequently standing and walking, and occasionally requires using hands to finger, handle, or feel, pushing or pulling, and lifting; work has no special vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed information to others; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, and observing general surroundings and activities; work has no exposure to environmental conditions; work is generally performed in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, personal computers, printers, person-to-person communication, light traffic, etc.).
