Job Description

Summary Valley County is seeking a skilled, safety-minded Mechanic to join the Road & Bridge Department team. This position performs journey-level preventive maintenance and mechanical repairs on a diverse county fleet, ranging from standard gasoline-powered light vehicles to heavy diesel-powered construction machinery and snow removal equipment. Operating out of a well-equipped shop, the Mechanic plays a vital role in keeping Valley County's infrastructure moving by ensuring all fleet assets are safe and reliable. This is a full-time position that offers stable year-round employment, robust public benefits, and a collaborative team environment. Typical Duties & Responsibilities Working side-by-side with a dedicated crew under the direction of the Shop Foreman, the Mechanic ensures Valley County's vehicles and heavy machinery stay safely on the move. A typical day balances routine shop maintenance with active troubleshooting, requiring the flexibility to jump from servicing light-duty trucks to diagnosing complex issues on heavy diesel construction machinery. The Mechanic uses everything from modern computer diagnostic systems to traditional hand tools and welding equipment to trace and fix mechanical failures.
Core daily responsibilities include:
Preventive & Routine Maintenance :
Performing oil changes, fluid flushes, tune-ups, and thorough safety inspections on gasoline and heavy diesel fleet vehicles.
System Diagnostics & Repair :
Troubleshooting and repairing complex mechanical, hydraulic, air brake, and electronic systems on heavy equipment like motor graders, loaders, and dump trucks.
Quality Control & Testing :
Utilizing a Class A CDL to test-drive and operate large commercial vehicles on public roadways, ensuring all repairs meet rigid safety standards.
Field Response & Documentation :
Maintaining precise digital records of parts and labor, keeping a clean and safe workspace, and occasionally responding to emergency equipment breakdowns directly in the field under varying mountain weather conditions. Because this role involves testing and moving large construction machinery on public roadways, a high level of driving compliance is non-negotiable. Key requirements for the position include:
Experience :
A minimum of two (2) years of professional mechanical experience working on mixed fleets, light trucks, and heavy diesel equipment; or an equivalent combination of formal technical education and field experience.
Licensing :
Possession and maintenance of a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with an acceptable driving record, or the verifiable ability to successfully obtain one within a specified timeframe from hire.
Technical Skills :
Foundational knowledge of engine mechanics, hydraulics, air brakes, and basic welding/fabrication, alongside proficiency with modern computerized diagnostic tools.
