Mechanic

The City of Bristol, VA is seeking a dedicated Mechanic with our Fleet Maintenance department to join in our efforts in supporting the daily operation of local City government. This position reports to the Fleet Manager and performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of a variety of makes and models of automobiles, trucks, equipment and buses, both diesel and gasoline. May be required to supervise Mechanic's Helper or be assigned to on-call coverage rotation. Duties include, but not limited to, making recommendations to supervisor regarding cost effectiveness and feasibility of repairs/replacement of vehicles and equipment. Making reports to supervisor regarding the status of vehicles and equipment and assists Administrative Personnel in record maintenance. Repairing and maintaining the following types of equipment and attachments: Automotive, to include automobiles, light and heavy trucks Heavy construction, to include graders, bulldozers, excavators, etc. Repair and maintenance of golf course equipment.

Successful applicants will have:

Good knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines and of mechanical repair on automobiles, trucks, buses, construction equipment and heavy fixed equipment. Ability to diagnose defects of equipment and to remedy defects Ability to repair electrical systems as related to vehicles and equipment. Ability to keep records and performance reports related to predictive, preventive and general maintenance. Minimum of two (2) years progressive working experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive and heavy equipment required. Valid Driver's License and/or Class B Commercial Driver's License or the ability to obtain said license within six months of the date of employment required.
