Job Title:
Medical Assistant - Hand Surgery / Orthopedic Clinic Job Description This role supports a hand surgeon and an orthopedic outpatient practice by providing high-quality clinical and administrative assistance. The medical assistant will room patients, support diagnostic and surgical workflows, maintain accurate electronic medical records, and help deliver an excellent patient experience. This position is ideal for a hardworking, team-oriented professional who is eager to learn, enjoys building long-term patient relationships, and is comfortable working in a fast-paced outpatient setting. Responsibilities Room patients promptly and prepare them for visits, including any necessary scans or diagnostic procedures. Take and accurately record patient vital signs and other basic clinical information. Send imaging orders and cases to radiology or MRI and ensure all required information is complete and accurate. Guide patients on next steps for follow-up scans, tests, or appointments, clearly explaining instructions and timelines. Schedule follow-up office visits and imaging appointments as needed, coordinating with patients and internal staff. Coordinate with the surgical scheduler and patients when surgery is required, ensuring all preoperative steps are completed. Follow up with patients to obtain and complete necessary forms, consents, and documentation. Reschedule patient appointments when needed and communicate changes clearly to patients and the care team. Prepare charts for both physician and physician assistant (PA) patients, ensuring all documentation is organized and up to date. Update and manage Athena EMR buckets, ensuring timely review and completion of tasks. Send lab results to the appropriate providers and ensure they are properly documented in the EMR. Close out Physical Therapy notes and ensure they are accurately filed within the patient record. Maintain and update EMR inboxes and patient records, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and confidentiality. Restock exam rooms and supply closets regularly and manage inventory to ensure necessary supplies are available. Collaborate effectively with physicians, PAs, and other team members to support smooth clinic operations. Provide courteous, professional customer service and maintain strong bedside manner with all patients. Demonstrate flexibility with shifts and responsibilities to support clinic needs. Essential Skills Experience in medical assisting or patient care in a clinical setting (open to new medical assistant graduates). Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR), preferably Athena or Epic, with openness to candidates experienced in other EMR systems. Ability to take and record vital signs accurately. High school diploma or GED. Strong customer service skills and professional bedside manner. Ability to work effectively as a team player in a clinical environment. Willingness to learn new processes, systems, and clinical workflows. Flexibility with work shifts and schedule, including occasional Saturdays. Additional Skills & Qualifications Certified or licensed Medical Assistant credential preferred but not required. Previous experience in an orthopedic or surgical office is beneficial. Comfort working in an outpatient setting with repeat patient visits and long-term patient relationships. Strong organizational skills, including chart preparation, documentation management, and task follow-through. Ability to manage a steady patient volume while maintaining accuracy and quality of care. Clear and professional communication skills with patients, providers, and staff. Work Environment This position is based in an outpatient orthopedic and hand surgery clinic. The role follows a Monday through Friday schedule for a 40-hour workweek, with occasional Saturday morning shifts from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (typically up to two Saturdays per month). Candidates must be available between 7:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., working an 8-hour shift within that window (for example, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.). The clinic uses electronic medical record systems, with a strong preference for Athena and familiarity with systems such as Epic. The environment is fast-paced, with an average of approximately 50 patients seen per day across providers. As an outpatient practice, the role offers the opportunity to see patients on a recurring basis—such as quarterly or biannually—and to build long-term relationships. The culture emphasizes teamwork, professionalism, and a supportive atmosphere for both experienced and newly graduated medical assistants. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Florham Park, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00/hr.
