Job Description

Summary:
Performs a wide variety of laboratory procedures such as processing specimens and performing patient testing when applicable. Shows a considerable degree of independent judgment regarding the performance and reporting of patient results.
Responsibilities:
1. Conducts tests on samples, verifies test and QC data, prepares stat smear results, maintains specimen & rejection logs, documents conversations regarding quality, inquiries & results according to standard operating procedures. 2. Accepts and verifies orders, processes specimens & quality of specimens, & stores clinical material. 3. Uses independent judgment for interpreting difficult work ups and direct testing when indicated. Problems with procedure/performance are resolved and approved alternative methods are used when available. 4. Maintains proper quality control of all tests and maintenance of instruments according to laboratory protocol. Section quality assurance policy is followed. Enters and verifies results, logs patient & specimen into LIS, organizes logs, requisitions, work cards & specimen storage. 5. Communicates test results and problems, calls all stats & critical values & documents all calls. Records all necessary information and leaves the report for management review and investigation. 6. Instructs new technicians, medical technician students and pathology residents. 7. Achieves the organization's established expectations regarding quality of service, teamwork and staff development. 8. Assures a clean and safe working environment. 9. Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position. 10. Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Skills Experience:
Required:
Associate degree: Medical Technology, Biological Science or Chemistry (preferred) or High School Diploma and minimum of one year job- related experience.
Minimum Experience:

ASCP preferred but not required.
