Medical Technologist

PRIMARY FUNCTION

The primary function of the Medical Technologist is to process specimen samples, performing of various laboratory tests, and reporting of test results. The lab technologist performs only tests that are authorized by the laboratory director and require a degree of skill commensurate with his or her education, training, and/or experience and technical abilities.

II. ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIP

The lab technologist reports to the laboratory manager

III. RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Follows laboratory policies and procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. Adhere to the lab's QC policies, document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. Follow the lab's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the lab's defined acceptable levels of performance. Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problem or immediately notify the lab manager/chief technologist. Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab's established performance specifications. Other duties as assigned.

V. EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

Must have an Associate degree in a laboratory science, or medical laboratory (delete) Technology or a Bachelor's in medical technology, clinical laboratory science or chemical, physical, or biological science. At least one (1) year medical lab tech experience in a hospital preferred Current licensure in the state of Louisiana. Must be computer literate. Must have good communication skills, both written and oral. Must maintain annual licensure requirements for continued education. BLS Required upon hire.
