Job Description

Through this transformative model for STEM exploration, NYSCI engages a broad community of learners in STEM by fostering the excitement of self-directed exploration and by tapping into the joy of learning intrinsic in young people's play. NYSCI has approximately 95 full-time and over 135 part-time and casual staff members.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Under general supervision, performs highly responsible work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of museum buildings, equipment, and facilities, as well as performing related work. Example of Typical Tasks Performs, or supervises the performance of, responsible general maintenance work or specialized work in regard to electrical wiring, plumbing, painting, glazing, stone work, woodworking, shop work, metal work, and automotive repairs.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Visually inspect buildings, structures, equipment, and vehicles to assess and check for defects, malfunctions, and hazardous conditions. Perform routine maintenance on buildings, machinery, equipment, appliances, furniture, and facility systems. Diagnose and repair cosmetic, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues. Maintain HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other building systems Install, adjust, and test new machinery or equipment as required. Constructs exhibit structures, backgrounds, and mountings. May perform responsible work in the reproduction of museum publications; or may lay out, construct, paint, and letter signs, markers, and directional indicators. Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repairs. Determine the parts and materials needed to repair pending job orders and coordinate with vendors and suppliers to place orders. Maintain detailed records and generate reports of repairs, inspections, inventories, and maintenance activities. Ensure all maintenance work complies with safety standards and company policies. Keep work areas clean, organized, and compliant with safety regulations. Other related duties and responsibilities, as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school graduation or high school equivalency required Five (5) years of experience in building construction, facility maintenance, or related field. Must be mechanically inclined, with a strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and general facility maintenance systems, as well as the ability to independently operate all maintenance equipment, such as hand tools, bench tools, ladders, etc. Ability to troubleshoot and repair equipment efficiently Experience with preventative maintenance programs and maintenance tracking systems. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, blueprints, and schematics. Able to use and/or be exposed to standard maintenance materials and commercial cleaning products Knowledge of safe practices in accordance with OSHA standards
  • wearing proper protective eye wear, gloves, earplugs, and utilizing fall arrest & head gear when appropriate, etc.
Ability to comprehend & apply safety procedures as they relate to Safety Data Sheets (SDS). Must be detail-oriented and able to follow oral and written instructions
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Technical or vocational training, or a degree in a relevant field, preferred Existing FDNY Certificate of Fitness holders preferred F1

  • Fire Guard for Temporary Places of Assembly S95
  • Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems
OSHA 10/30
Certification preferred Fork truck and/or aerial lift certification preferred Bilingual Candidate preferred (English/Spanish)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to lift, pull, push, and carry 50 lbs Ability to bend, kneel, stoop, crawl, and climb Ability to work in varied physical environments, including outdoors, confined areas, and at height.
