Job Description

The role and your impact Davis Sings is in search of a dependable and reliable Music Director for the Hummingbird choir of the Davis Youth Choir (DYC). The Hummingbird choir consists of children from the ages 5-8 (Kindergarten
  • 2nd grade).
Learning goals for the children include: pitch matching, rhythm, very basic note reading, how to follow a conductor, and sing as a choir. There are two sessions a year, Spring and Fall, and each culminates in a final performance where the choir is expected to perform one to two songs. The Hummingbird choir also performs at the annual Fall "Open House". The Hummingbird director chooses songs and designs their class, and conducts rehearsals and performances. The Hummingbird director also participates in the Bel Canto (grades 7 and up) and the Larks (grades 3-6) classes as a classroom monitor, and occasional musical support person during classes and performances. The DYC Bel Canto/Larks director acts as monitor and musical support person for the Hummingbird director. The Hummingbird director is supported by the Davis Sings Board, the DYC Steering Committee, and the DYC Artistic director. The employment is contingent on being successfully vetted through the State of California Department of Justice Fingerprint background check and FBI database system. Working schedule and known performance dates During Fall (September-December) and Spring (Feb-May) sessions (we follow the Davis Joint Unified School District calendar for Fall and Spring breaks): Direct weekly Hummingbirds choir rehearsals: Wed 2:45
  • 3:45 PM; preparation starts at 2:30 PM Assist weekly Larks choir rehearsals: Wed 4
  • 5:15 PM; Assist weekly Bel Canto rehearsals: Thur 7
  • 8:15 PM Direct Hummingbird performances: 2026-27 concert/performance dates 10/18/2026: DYC Fall Open House 12/5/2026: Holiday concert 12/21/2026: Assist DYC Bel Canto/Larks director at the Capitol Rotunda concert 2027 Family Friendly Concert (date tba) Other prep time or activities related to DYC businesses Employment requirement Due to the nature of working with children, the employment is contingent on being successfully vetted through the State of California Department of Justice Fingerprint background check and FBI database system.
Completion of the California Mandated Reporter Training every two years Responsibilities and duties Select age-appropriate choral pieces to be performed at Holiday and Spring Concerts (2-3 pieces). Plan and develop curriculum for an hour long music/choral class one time per week whose goals include teaching the children: To sing as a group How to pitch matching and stay on pitch Basic rhythm/note values
  • eighth notes, quarter notes, half notes, whole notes, rests, etc. Basics of music reading
  • introductions to the staff (lines and spaces), measures, G-clef, how notes on lines and spaces relate to the sound they make, etc. Basics of dynamics, tempo and vocal quality The prerequisites to harmony
  • rounds and canons The importance of storytelling using theatre and movement games and poetry.
Assist the Director of Larks and Bel Canto choirs as needed.
