Supervisor:
Archaeologist, NPS Maintenance Supervisor Description:
Assist the Park archeologist with archeological survey (i.e., shovel testing, soil coring, GPS mapping) and excavation work in outdoor and remote areas. Overnight camping and backcountry travel is required.
Education:
Must have a high school diploma or general education degree. Individuals must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree or certificate-seeking program, and at or above an advanced undergraduate level (3 years or more) in archaeology, anthropology or related discipline (geography, soil science, earth science and geographical information system (GIS)). Candidates must have successfully completed an undergraduate-level, archaeology field school, as well as coursework in archaeological methods and regional archaeological culture history or North America.
Qualifications:
Applicant must be willing to participate in several weeks of training in cultural resource management law and compliance implementation. This position requires working long hours in a remote back country environment while carrying a pack with equipment and field gear. The applicant must be able to work and hike in challenging environments, with challenging terrain, dense forest vegetation, biting insects and wetland conditions. The applicant must be able to follow park safety protocols. Grand Portage requires a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol testing for all positions. American Indian Preference will apply.
